Sad to say but at the recent local PCA "other car AX", my current Subie LL Beanie estate was soundly thrashed by KJR's newly aquired A4 Avant.
The Wallowmobile was overcome by German chassis development...

And Wallow she did! Watching the Subi come around turns was pretty entertaining. I'm liking my choice of the Avant over Subi even more now. Sadly, I didn't get to ride with Craig to fully experience the Subi Sideways Experience (I speak of body roll, not drift capability here...). The extra 4 inches of ride height that help the off-road capability really puts the Outback at a serious disadvantage in AX. However on a recent hiking trip out in the desert, I would have liked to have that extra suspension travel...

As for the Avant...with traction control off, you CAN get an Avant sideways in a nice drift.

Great thread. Big Avant fan and will always have one in the fleet. My regular drive is an S6 and on the hunt for an RS6 Avant. Interesting to see how many 993 owners back up that car with an "Estate".

With the velocity produced by the turbo during the summer driving season the S6 fills the gap nicely in the salted road months. Sorry no pics of the Audi.

Merry Christmas
Rick

I have a 2005 Audi Allroad-apr tuned to 340 hp and 400 lbs of torque-goes everywhere
and no one has any idea what it can really do! Has never let us down!
I must say I am tempted to get a avant rs6 with a v10 motor-or a sport range rover-or a cayenne gts-
will decide after the new year. Nothing wrong with the audi-in-fact I will miss it. Just want to
play with something else.

Question for S4 Owners, especially B6.
I've found a 2004 S4 Avant at a nearby dealer and am hoping I can do a deal for it using my '07 FJ cruiser and +/- a few dollars.
My wife has a '03 A4 1.8T so I'm familiar with the overall package.
Anything I should should be looking for specific to this model when doing an inspection/test drive ?
Thanks

'04 was the first year of the 4.2 V8 that utilized a timing chain (as opposed to a belt in previous versions of the motor). The motor is known for chain guide (and tensioner) failures and cylinder scoring. The chain guides aren't a huge deal, but it is expensive to fix because it requires the motor to be pulled. The cylinder scoring is fairly rare, but it usually results in needing to replace the motor. However, with that said, the chain guides/cylinder scoring issues are akin to the IMS failures the 996s are "famous" for... the forums are full of threads about how to prevent it and terrible it is, but only a a handful of people can actually reporting having had said issue.

The cylinder scoring seems to be caused by people who do long oil change intervals (like 10k+ miles), and/or who don't let the car warm up properly before driving it hard (4k+ RPMs).

The '04s have the highest reported rate of chain guide issues because Audi revised the design/material in the '05+ models. When checking out a 4.2, make sure the engine is cold and has no been started recently. When starting the car, listen carefully for a rattling/marbles in the motor noise for the first couple seconds. This is a sign of a chain tensioner issue. You can find several examples of the noise on YouTube.

I just sold my Avant in order to make the switch to a 964/993 (still not sure on which I want or what I'll end up with).

I still have another wagon that will be taking over daily duties (a '00 Passat V6).

also check for production date of it.late 03 and early 04 build dates were more prone to it.other than that, they're pretty bulletproof.i'm on my second 4.2 s4 and love every minute of being in a v8 wagon....never gets old seeing the look on people faces when they realize that noise is coming from a grocery getter

Car was paid off and I have modded pretty much everything on it. Ideally I would have bought an RS4 here but the re-sale of my car was so low in the US that i preferred to keep it as my DD. I know all the history, maintained it well with all turbo, fueling, suspension, brake upgrades etc. so it's fast and familiar
