Radio volume
Not sure if all 993s have this but mine has the orignal CR210 radio and the volume increases and decreases depending on rpms or speed. I find it kind of annoying since it changes too often even when rpms have not changed much. Was wondering if this is normal. Does this feature disappear when an aftermarket stereo is put in? Is there a way to disconnect this feature in the stock radio?

Some radios do have a function where the volume will increase with speed. I'm not sure the CR210 has this. It is supposed to counteract road noise and keep the volume constant. I had a SAAB convertible that had this feature with the factory radio. ANNOYING to say the least. I was able to turn off this function.

I am fairly sure the 210 does not have the auto-volume feature - somewhat born out by the connection scheme from the manual which does not show a connection to the tach or speedo.

I have a CR210 and it increases the volume above ~3k rpm and then decreases the volume when the rpms go below ~3k. I'll check to see if I can find anything in the radio manual that addresses this.

I did some searching. It appears this feature goes with the premium sound option, which my car has. The amp under the seat controls the auto volume feature. There may be a way to turn it on/off by accessing the user menu. Turn the radio off, the turn it on and immediately hold down the * key. This takes you into the user menu and using the manual station tuning button scroll to the feature "GME" or some such name, then you use the arrow keys to choose the desired setting. ??? No guarantees.

It's called the "gal" (speed dependent volume control) setting, & has a adjustment for it from off to high.
Sadly I do not know how to adjust it with Cr210, but it should be in the manual, or you can call Becker.

I have a Becker and it has speed dependent volume control. It uses the speed pulse for control of the volume, using a user defined sensitivity factor.
RPM dependent seems weird to me.

Well I guess I reach the "speed" that triggers a noticeable change in radio volume around 3K rpm in whatever gear it was. Kind of silly to change the volume based on speed vs RPM. I definitely get more engine noise than wind noise in the cabin. :-)

Makes perfect sense to me to be speed based, if it was RPM based it would be going up and down all the time and drive you nuts. Personally I like it, I think mine is set on GAL 2 or 3 (out of 7).

The feature in German is called; Geraeuschabhaengige Lautstaerkeabwicklung or GALA for short.
The audio level increase and at what vehicle speed are both adjustable if I recall. I have the optional CDR 210 (CD/Radio) and the HiFi speakers.
When adjusted correctly that is minimally, GALA is sublime. Many German cars have this. The "how To adjust" is in radio's operation manual although the specific instruct path I don't recall off the top of my head. Once home i'll view the original CDR-210 manual and advise though.
Stopped bye Porsche Frankfurt today and no NEW 911s just yet. (Seem's I just missed a Rep's car being there.) Did pickup a nice hard bound brochure though. December 3rd is the Germany roll out date for the newest Elf'er. The 911 is all grown up now . . . driving the 993 model is to recall the 911s youth.
