Strange noise when turning...
I've noticed my 993 making a fairly loud whirring/grinding noise when making quick turns... It is especially noticeable when taking spirited U-turns. I thought it might be the tires rubbing at first but it still occurs when the wheel is only turned slightly during wider turns. Any ideas what might be going on?

Well, I just went outside and jacked up the car. I checked each wheel for wobble and noise when I turned them. Everything seemed OK. So I'm guessing it's not the wheel bearing? Or maybe it's a wheel bearing in the early stages of failure? I'm really not sure what's going on...
Threw in a pic of the IIa for ya. She's in pretty rough shape but she gets the job done.

I agree on the power steering fluid level. I almost jumped through the roof when I heard this in my car in a roundabout. I had a leak in the steering rack and had to change it into a refurbished unit.

Meridius,
Nice IIa - I owned one in Iceland for a few years.
As for the front wheel bearings, bad bearings tend to show their colors during turns, when the forces on them change.
I would raise the front of the car, remove the wheels, and then turn the hubs while feeling for any roughness.

What year 993? Do you have the strut brace on the rack that was added after '96?
It is recommended to change the power steering fluid periodically.
Best done after a drive when fluid is warm.
I used 2 liters of Pentosin CHF 202 as follows:
A 1/4" Nylon hose, about 5 feet long and a drain pan on the floor.
Put one end of the hose into the PS reservoir, suck on the other end and place it into the pan, let it drain.
Fill reservoir with new fluid and drive for a few days. Repeat the process 5-6 times. Takes a few weeks for the new stuff to flush out most of the old fluid.
Some use a turkey baster but I prefer the Nylon-line-method.
Keep an eye on the level if you suspect a leak.

Does it make the noise when turning in only one direction? If so, that would most likely rule out the PS fluid level and point more to a bearing. I replaced one on my 964 and it took me a while to figure out it was the bearing and harder to determine which side.
