Question What shocks are these?

'95 Canadian 993 c2

Option code says 030 but some people doubt this because this 993 sits very low.

The rear shocks look like black paint? and have a large green dot towards the bottom.

Rear springs have a little black paint left on them plus dirt and rust.

Dark paint (black?) with a 3/4" green round dot is what brand of shock?

Same year as mine.

Mine are black. I think they are Boge.

Just found a pic....yup, Boge.

Thanks Alex,

Very nice picture and way too clean.

Is your 993 also very low? Can you see a large green dot?

Since there is no adjustment that I can see, how is the height adjusted?
Spacers under the springs?
I also notice a multitude (10-12) of flat washers on the nut where the shock connects to the body inside the engine bay.

Was Boge an option over OEM Monroe?

My 1995 C2 rides at the North American ride height.

As for the green dot, I can't say for sure.

The ride height is fixed. No spacers that I know of, but then I haven't checked PET. The front shocks are adjustable for ride height.

???

All I know is my '95 C2 came with the black Boge shocks pictured. A local '96 993 C2 that I got the old shocks from are made by Monroe and they are green.

Maybe a C2S or a C4S had other shocks.

Bill V. would surely know.

Boge & Monroe were both OEM suppliers to PAG and used interchangeably.

Great info, thanks.

There seem to be soooo....many variations on suspensions.

Trying to find out why this 993 sits so low compared to others?

It handles beautifully, no issues and the shocks are still firm.

Option code says 030 but why so low???

Would this be 030 ROW height?

What would have been done to lower so much? Special springs?

Gunter, I'm not convinced that the ride height is way below the Euro M030 specs. It looks a bit higher than the RS height that mine is set at but I could be wrong with only that picture as a reference.
At any rate, different springs would cause the ride height to be lowered, usually Eibach or H&R springs were the flavour of the month to do this. Since this was a Weissach car and Weissach used to be the dealer for H&R ( not sure if they still are) it makes sense that they installed H&R springs. You need to look at the springs and see any markings on them. That will tell the story...

The car seems to me way below Euro M030, closer to RS specs. But it should be easy to measure if answers are actually important.

The springs may be anything. If the dealer made the "improvements" it behooves them to simply take M030 springs and cut them to get the desired height.

If these are OEM springs, of course, there will be two or three very obvious and visible color marks on black springs.

...take M030 springs and cut them to get the desired height.... Of course everyone realizes that when you cut the springs, making them shorter, you also make them stiffer, at least that is what I was told once upon a time....

Martin, I'm not advocating cutting springs, but a dealer might have easily done it as 'prep".

One problem I found on very low 993's is you are at the limits of the suspension for adjustably - it makes a good alignment quite the challenge. One of the biggest areas is the amount of adjustment in the toe-arm in the rear suspension. I ended up replacing the stock arms with Tarett arms on the Targa, so I can get more adjustment, otherwise I was getting scrubbing on my stock suspension. The Turbo is a bit higher, just had an alignment, and it's OK but at the limits.

Gunter, I guess what I was asking is are you getting even tire wear front and back?

Your car is not slammed, I agree with Danny, it looks close to RS. In the rear, is the top of the tire the same height as the top of the wheel well on the body? The usual way to do this cheaply is to just replace the springs, keep the stock shocks, and away you go. There is usually limited height adjustability on the front shocks, that is in order to do a corner balance on the car.

I find it very hard to judge the wear on shocks by bouncing on the car - unless you take the sways off, that might help. I have bounced on cars that appear to have good shocks, and once I strip the shock out (including removing the spring), I can move the shock shaft up and down with two fingers.... however, if you like the handling, and the car feels planted, then its all good.

Cheers,

Mike

Cheers,

Mike

Thumbs up

Thanks to all for the informative replies.

DJF1,
Even though Weissach serviced the car in the last ~4 years and sold it to me, the suspension was set up by MCL Vancouver as a custom order originally.

nile13,
Springs are too rusty to make out any color markings.

Mike,
Agree on even tire-wear and I keep a close eye on the treads. After driving for about 15k, I found a little too much wear on the inside edge on both front wheels. Camber was satisfactory but too much toe-in which I reduced somewhat. Rear wear is nice and even. With a full tank, space between tires and fender edge is about the same.

To sum up, I like the set-up and only want to know what my options are when the time comes to replace components. The various options are somewhat confusing to a newbie on coil-overs, 030, 033, Koni, Boge, Bilstein, Euro, RoW..........................help.

I like the ride height and handling, so, for spirited driving on country roads, I'd keep the springs that are on it and at some point replace the struts/shocks with Koni? Boge? or?

That way I'd keep the same ride-height. Yes?

Or is it better to order shocks and springs together? But new springs would change the height. What components to order to keep the same height?

Appreciate any suggestions and input on the above plan.

Many thanks.
