Airbag light fault
Hi guys,
I've recently had the airbag light come on and when I tried to clear it with the Durametric it goes out for about 3 seconds and comes straight back on. I've removed the steering wheel and checked all connections etc and nothing obvious looks wrong. Where do I start with checking things?
Has anyone had a clock spring apart? Pics of a the inside of one?
How do I check the clock spring is working? Can you check it for resistance?
The other item to check is obviously the airbag module. Any ideas on how to check this is not faulty?
Any other ideas or help appreciated and I have already used the search function
If the clock spring is stuffed does anyone have a good one they want to sell?

The Durametric would not clear airbag codes for me. I could read them but not reset them.
Some 993s came with the 996 airbag CU. If the Durametric connects to the airbag CU you are beyond that issue. If yours had the 996 unit you would have to connect with the Durametric via the 996 menu.
There are codes for the control unit. If you can read the code post it and I'll see what it says in the Porsche OBD manual.

Thanks Hoggel. I can read and clear the code but within 3 seconds it comes back on, same fault code, same result for Porsche Indy with Porsche tool.
Anyone else?
I don't mind replacing the clock spring etc but not if its not at fault. Unfortunately here in NZ we don't have these parts off the shelf so I could order it only to find its not the culprit.

Had the same problem last year... Porsche dealer had a TSB out to replace a wiring harness somewhere in the steering wheel or console. Cost was about $200, and it's been good to go for almost a year.

Hmm I'm guessing its the clock spring but would like to test it first before I buy a new one.
The Durametric is recognizing and communicating with the Airbag Module fine.

Is your guess based on the code? If it is 04, 05, 20, 21, or 36 it can be either the airbag or the spring. Or the wiring of course. If there is a problem with the CU the code should be >100.

My guess is based on the fact that the Durametric is communicating with the module and the clock spring is usually the part that fails more than any other component in the system.
Here is a screen shot of the error.
