Default InterCity dropping off 993 tomorrow ... do you tip?

Just completed a cross-country move where I've been tipping packers and movers right and left, but I hadn't really thought about tipping the InterCity driver.

He went out of his way for me on the Austin side of the move; I was in Boston (they were two weeks late getting the car) and he couldn't get his truck around a tight turn at the entrance of the development (neither could my movers, I warned him), so he backed it out, parked it on the side and hiked about a mile to my house to get the car out of the garage. (He said he didn't mind, it was a nice day and not too hot.)

What's a nice tip for him? Buy him dinner? $50?

I generally do especially when you feel you've been taken care of. Sounds like a he did you good job for you so I'd say yes to the tip.

We tip the company drivers we use $100.00 when they drop off. Sometimes we also buy their dinner if the pick up the car (cars) late in the day.
When they took all three cars out to California we tipped them $200.00.

I was very disappointed in the service I received from Intercity, and I did not tip the driver one penny. I will never use them again. Next time I need transport I'm calling Reliable.

About 5% (or more) of the trip would be good, assuming you were happy with the service, of course.

I usually tip about $100 as well if they are on time and nice people. I am expecting my TT's return from FDM early next week (hopefully) with Reliable. I can't wait to wash off all the west coast bugs and remove my RSR shirts and posters!

Interesting question. If they are "just doing their job" would you tip? They aren't like wait staff that earn their living on tips. If there are 6 cars on the trailer each pulling $2500 for the owner, I'd have to think that level of responsibility pays the driver well. Most transports are independents, where they make the lion's share of the money and the broker gets a cut. I just sent a car 250 miles for $300 and there were 3 cars on a 1-level trailer pulled by a pick up. 4 hour trip x 3 cars at $300 = $1200. Not bad.

Then again, if I get better service than expected or just have a feeling that my car (or I) was treated much better than the standard, then why not? I often give something and say "happy hour is on me".

Is everyone getting a 993 this week? Mine arrives next week - can't wait (been keeping this a secret until it gets here - Shhh...)

A tip only makes sense if there is special, or better said, exceptional (going beyond) service. You know it when you experience it. Otherwise, doing your job does not require a tip.

I would only tip if the service was better than expected. Based on the pick-up I would plan on tipping the driver. I have transported a few cars; the last time it cost them $6000 to fix my body work. Be ready to tip, but check your car out first.
