Were your parents in the military. I ask because I took a wrong turn into a dead end in Stuttgart that ended up in a US military section while on my way to the museum in 2015 (and again in 2019 for the 50th of the 917).

Same here. It took a cell phone yapping kid in Austria that ran into my stopped motorcycle and ended up with a Stryker T2 nail in my tibia that made me think, "life can be short" so I bought my first Porsche. Now I have two.

Same here way back when I subscribed to Vette Vues and wanted a 63-67 series Vette or the 70 Vette with the LT1. Never happened. I was never impressed by the quality, sagging doors, cheap interior, etc. Good from far and far from good. Besides, as a kid, I always wanted a 911.

My dad was a big Porsche guy back in the 356 days. He grew up in Marina Del Rey and built surfboards for years. We bought a "project 911" in 1994. Crapbox 911 with rattlecan paint for $4k. Built it up together over the years. That hooked me for life. We went over to Porsche Marin one day after I graduated high school and there sat a brand new turbo on Arena Red. That was in 1997.

Fast forward to 2012 and I was on the hunt for my own arena red 993. Bought it site unseen as a project as well. Had a PPI done, missed tons of stuff. Don't care. Prices were low and these things were unwanted and unloved.

Happily restoring it ever since.

About 10 years ago I stumbled across this website. I started reading various threads about the different models but something about the 993 struck a chord. I blame Rennlist.

Been building classic Chevy muscle cars since I bought my first 66 Chevelle project at 15 years old back in 1994. Fast forward to 2019 when I drove a GT3 RS on a track in TX...immediately fell in love with the user friendliness of Porsche performance.

Last April I got a ridiculously stupid offer for my 63 Corvette pro touring car and sold it...bought a GT4RS the next day. Have since picked up a 67 911 that I built a lil hot rod 2.2 motor for and about 2 months ago bought a 993 with 29k miles to use as a semi-daily driver. Still love my Chevy toys but for driving experience Porsche is hard to beat.

The original reasons why I was attracted to my first Porsche 911, an '80s vintage one?
My brother owned one, and a 911 was one of the few near-exotic sportscars at the time that was reliable and inexpensive to own and service as a daily driver.

I saw my professor driving one while taking his class in 1997 and it was always in the back of my mind as unattainable until I did an expat project in Tokyo 15 yrs later. The aircooled meets in Tokyo with RWB were the rekindled experiences and I bought mine 1.5 in 2014. It was the last car that I truely bought to keep.

To the car-obsessed little boy that I was in the seventies, a Porsche 911 was as much as the ultimate sports car. Air cooled of course, as they all were at the time. While various other motorized love affairs (a Fiat Spider, a BMW 2002, an Audi RS6 and several Ducati motor bikes amongst many others) crossed my path during life, an air cooled Porsche proved to be a life long dream. It took some time, but at the age of 56 I was finally able to make the dream come true and bought a 993: to my eyes the ultimate incarnation of the air cooled Porsche.

Fell in love with the 911 silhouette watching the original Bad boyz movie. Told myself I was going to get one before I turned 30. That was about 1 mo before I proposed to my gf, and then house, kids, work, and work moves got in the way. She walks in 4 yrs ago and says..'Hey, didn't you say you were going to get a Porsche? You're really late you know...'

Like several others on this thread, I blame Rennlist. Apparently I’ve been a member of Rennlist since 2012 - but got my first in 2020, then couldn’t stop.

My first Porsche fell into my lap as a barn find, DIY project car offer that I couldn't pass up--an early '66 912 for $1500. Enjoyed it for a couple of years then essentially traded that 912 for another Porsche opportunity that pretty much fell into my lap, too--this time a '96 993. Still have it.

After messing with BMW 2002's and Audi 100LS's my best friend and I came across a 71E back in 1977. We spent the next several months rebuilding it after school. Had to rework the rusted body and the torsion tube was gone after only 6 years. The torsion tube took months to get correct before welding it in palce. Painted it in IMRON paint and drove it to California non stop from NJ to San Diego in 34+ hours. I have owned at least 1 911 since.
