What made you buy a Porsche?

I was a VW beetle guy in high school, and my Dad bought an old 1960 356B Cab that had been hot-rodded with a super 90 engine. He made the mistake of letting me drive it, and after that first time, I knew that I would never be satisfied with a 40hp VW again. in the mid 1990's my career finally started to pay, I started to look. Once I saw a 993, that was all it took, I had to have one. Unfortunately it would be a few more years before the price would actually reconcile with the check book, because I don't finance toys. Even though it's paid for and has been very reliable, for some mysterious reason I still seem to spend a lot of money on it!

Went to work for Dick Barbour (Automotion in San Diego 1968) when I was in High School during the summer. Worked there for about 18 months before going into the Navy. Learned a lot from Dieter who was his business partner before they split and went there own seperate ways. Spent most of my time working on his E production super 90. went to the SCCA events at Riverside raceway Laguna and PIR. working on Porsches and being exposed to them on a daily basis was like being in heaven at the time. Also supported Dennis Sherman while he worked there. What a group to be around and it was a total blast. I have since ouned a 63 356 coupe and a 71 911 that I bought as a disasembled basket case. I now have a NB 993 coupe that has been my pride and joy since 2001. Being of German discent I guess they just run in my blood.

Being born and raised in Los Angeles, there were always lots of great cars around. Porsches just sounded the best, and looked great too. I also loved the idea of a simple car that wasn't always the most powerful, but was just a great overall, well balanced car. I suppose the James Dean/Steve McQueen aura around these cars also made them seem like something truly fantastic.
When the 964 and then the 993 series came out, I could see they were something even more special. When Porsche moved away from air-cooled cars, I knew either one of those models I would need to own. I met a beautiful woman in 2003, and she picked me up on our second date in her mint 1996 Carrera 4S. I knew I needed her, and the car. She was my girlfriend soon after, and I convinced her to sell the car to me.

My Uncle had a 69 912 but that didn't really get me into Porsche until my cousin gave me a ride in his 911T Targa and then when he bought a 1976 930 Turbo Silver with Gold BBS wheels. I was hooked. My goal was to purchase my 1st 911 when I turned 25. I've been a proud Porsche owner ever since and have been blessed to have owned a few.

I was never a big Porsche fan until 1996 - my first job out of college and my boss at the time had taken delivery of a brand new black on cashmere 993 4S. Almost everyday after that, I used to take the long way to the office going all the way down into the parking garage to look at that car before heading back up to start work. Six years later I realized the dream of ownership and I haven't looked back since.

My first motor GT race at Silverstone in the early 70's as a small kid, I saw a 935 come from the back of the grid to win the race. The idea that they could win any race, stuck! Had Longines sponsors logo all over it so together with a Porsche, I wanted the watch too. No longer own a Longines, but no intention to be without a Porsche.

I always admired the Porsche but was an american muscle car guy (69 Charger RT. 396 Chevelles, 327 Nova, etc. And then I discovered sportscars via 73 240Z and 1st generation Mazda RX7s. Started going German with BMWs (still have that passion), a few Audis, Mercedes and never thought about owning a Porsche.
One late friday afternoon, a partner of mine walked into my office and said that he just traded in his 944 Turbo for a 928 GT and asked if I wanted to take a ride from our Manhattan offices to my home in NJ. The garage attendent brought the car to us and my partner said, why don't you drive it to NJ. Hmmm. Not a bad idea.
So here I am in a new 928GT navigating the Lincoln Tunnel merge (need to be a bit bold but hard to do with a new Porsche, let alone not yours) and realized that the 928 is wide. I noticed the incredible power as we exited the Tunnel onto the helix to the NJ Turnpike. This 928Gt pulled like a freight train.
I asked my partner how he compared the 928 to his former 944 Turbo. He said he is on the fence as to which one is better. Each had specific qualities and very different. After some Porsche talk, he mentioned that he returned the 944 Turbo 4 months early on his lease and paid off the remaining payments. I asked him WHY did he not speak to me as I would have taken over the lease.
With a few calls to the dealer (Jack Daniels) we were able to retrieve the car (4 months left on the lease) and I had a beautiful red 944 Turbo in my garage. This became my first Porsche that began my delightful journey. So, from 944 Turbos, to 86 Carerra, to 993s and 997. When I picked up a new Corvette C6 between the 993 and 997, I realized how much more I enjoyed the driving experience of a Porsche.
My wife, who helped me pick up the 997 in Connecticut, called me (hands fee of course) while we were driving back and asked about my intiial impressions. My response was that it was great to be back.

In about 1996 at a BMW Drivers school at Grattan I got a ride in a instructors 911. I couldn't believe how hard the car braked after landing the jump! Fast forward 14 years and after getting out of racing an SCCA FC the wife and I wanted another car we could weekend drive and maybe get back to the track for some non-racing fun. I thought of the 911 experience and decided to get one. After researching all years of 911, it had to be a 993, as I feel it is the best combination of looks, performance, reliability and resale value. Happy with the choice. So far it's been fun on the weekends, but haven't been back to the track yet.

Back in 1976, being picked up at SFO and riding in the backseat of a 1972 Targa with my suitcase watching the bridge structure of the Bay Bridge overhead "Whoosh" by heading to Walnut Creek. I knew a Porsche would be in my future as I would buy my first Porsche, a 1982 SC in 1996 and eventually the CarreraS in 2007.

i was born in Hungary (eastern block behind the iron curtain) in 1974. That time there were 99% russian. cars on the roads. In 1980 our friends from west Germany visited us with several cars. one of them was a red 911 with turbo wing. I spent most of my time to sit in the car for a week or so. i felt in love inmediatly and decided to get a Porsche once. that time it was a dream like to buy a Bugatti Veyron nowdays ...
the world had changed in 1989 (thanks for God) and got the chance to have one if you have enough money. Money is a big issue in Hungary since the average monthly loan is about 500-600$. Anyway in 2008 i could have bought my first 993! It was an awesome feeling to drive my own Porsche! it took a lot of time, but my friend, who owned the red 930 and infected me with aircooled virus lended his 993 every time i visited him in Germany in the past decade

Got out of the Navy in'66 and landed my first real job with TI in Dallas. Having driven a '60 VW through college, and then mid-way through my tour in the Navy, graduated to a '63 Karmann Ghia , I purchased a brand new '66 912 for the princely sum of $5,000. Kept it for 5 glorious, fun-filled years. For a number of reasons, switched over to BMW and, after many, many years and many different cars, found myself instructing for PCA DE's. Close proximity to such gorgeous machines got my juices flowing again, and, after posing the question, "What model Porsche captures the past with the present, offers creature comfort, not so complicated that you can't work on them and has some degree of collectibility?" The answer kept coming back "993"...so here I am!
