"Exotic" whenever driven and parked generates a crowd of people taking pictures next to or on top of it. This seldom happens to me in the 993 but happens all the time to my buddy in his F355Spyder.

I feel it depends on the Neighborhood. In the rural-ish area of San Diego where I live I feel that my 993 is an "exotic" car, people stare at it. You can easily go a month and not see a single Porsche let alone a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. Drive 50 miles up the coast to Laguna Beach or Newport and my car is just another old Porsche, outshadowed by the $200K+ luxury sports cars which are in my eyes the true "exotics."

My wife used to live in Venezuela and her father owned a new Camaro down there. Driving through a small farm town a few hours outside of Caracas the Camaro drew a huge crowd of locals who stared at it like a spaceship had just landed. Everything is relative.

1. Innovative in style, materials, construction methods, performance, etc.
2. Created in very small numbers
3. Expensive by nature

Then again, I don't consider anything but the 1920s Bugattis and certain very early ferraris as exotic.

Everything is merely a car.

A 993 does not register at all on the exotic scale

Edmunds recently completed a "100 Greatest Cars of All Time" report. There are some "exotics" on the list, but their reminder than a 911 (#5!) is an everyday (better stated as "every day") sports car undermines the impractical notion of a true exotic. I'm reluctantly leaning toward "no."

When you consider things like Bugatti, Lambo, Bentley, etc. we're really not in that class, and that's probably a good thing.

Separate-but-related issue: "What's a super car?"

A 911, I hope, is not "exotic". It shouldn't be. OK, here it is: exotic is anything more rare and expensive than a 911.

IMHO, a 911 of any kind is not an exotic and is all the better for it.

959 most definitely an exotic especially during its reign in the mid to late 80s

Must have some elements of outlandish appeal to qualify for exotic status as well as
rarity value and performance to match

A 993GT2 may qualify as exotic to the informed enthusiast, but to the average person it's just a 911 with big spoilers and fender flares.

This is what's most appealing about just about any 911 of any era IMO, the fact that they have most if not all of the performance of contemporary exotics yet are very useable every day. To me, the ability of a car to function well as a DD eliminates it from exotic status (Let's be real, can you imagine using an F355 everyday?).

I don't disagree.

nope, thats just a modification of a base 993.

I also don't consider the 959 exotic.

No modern ferrari or lamborghini is an exotic either.
