roof racks(gutter mount) are quick, secure, and easy...

Just had two cyclocross races this last weekend, 200 mile roundtrip on Saturday, 150 mile round trip on Sunday. Car is bliss as a race day transport.

Sweet setup! Thx for the pic.

Not quite sure I want a full rack on top of my 993... will have to weigh my options.

Well, it's a pretty straight forward on and off. A one person job when you place a towel on the opposite side. Note that the rear towers and load bars are at an angle to the bike tray, because of the angle of the roofline. Also note the two different tower heights for the rack to be level. I have other pics of the original set up with same height gutter mounts-looked weird with a nose up attitude-IMHO.

Enough room for two bike fork mounts, two wheel holders...and a narrow rocketbox between.

Makes for an excellent conversation starter too!

Here's a link to what I'd want. Very stealth when on/off

I emailed this gentleman early on in my rack search. At that time he had some medical issues according to his wife. I honestly don't know if he is still making these or not.

A beautifully constructed option for bike transport, that's for sure.

Good luck!

Only thing I hate about the roof rack is that it KILLS the gas mileage. Might as well take the truck.........

I picked up a Wilwood from someone here, but the ball hitch version. Planned on fabricating something like the bike attachment sometime.

I get a drop in mileage, but nothing drastic. Rack is almost always on the car, and a bike is almost always attached to it. I haven't done the math for fuel economy-I do keep a record of every tank so it would be simple math.

I would estimate no more than a 10-15% drop for me...maybe your higher mileage C4S, and higher temps on your coast contribute to your bigger drop. Also, your usually carrying two bikes-yours and Karen's -right? You also have the much more upright frame mount bike carrier, where I have the fork type mount that removes the front wheel...and only one bike up there for most of the time.

~17MPG @ 75MPH. Yes, the upright version. Similar with the snowboard last winter, but some serious up-the-hill driving is involved there. Oddly, if I'm just running the rack I notice I can barely get 20MPG around town (which is 90+% freeway @ 70-75) v. 21ish with the naked roof. So I usually take it off.

Worst of the worst was last spring when we put the rack on Karen's '06 325i (E90) to go to Phoenix. I literally watched the gas gauge fall as soon as we left home. ~80 in that car down I5 is about 27MPG. The onboard computer showed 16MPG. I toned it down to 70 and barely got 20 for the rest of the ~1500 miles. Amazing how aero tuned late model cars are.
