Over the past week my ac stopped working. We took it to a porsche mechanic and realized that it was the ac fan condenser that was not working. Not fully convinced that it could be that, we grabbed a battery and a directly wired the fan to it. To our surprise it worked, so its definitely not a defective fan. We checked the fuses in the hood and trunk and everything checked out ok. Is there anything else missing? I read here that there is a resistor next to the fan? Im not sure, has anyone else had this problem? Im sure im not alone.
there is a resistor that is next to the cond fan.....it does go bad....that will not stop the a/c from working, it just wont work quite as well....vinnie
need part # 993 616 521 01....it is located on the drivers front.....take off drivers front wheel, drop fender liner, will see it on top inside condensor fan assemby.....should need a 4mm allen.....vinnie
Yep, very common failure. the replacement part is much more robust, with a heat sink to protect the resistor. PIA to replace, I am told. I had mine done when the front bumper was off.
You can also wire a switch to control the fan - very useful for autocrossing and slow traffic situations. See the DIY section of P-Car.com I put my switch in the blank on the dash next to the fog light switch.
The fan run on slow speed when a resistor is connected in series with the motor. That's the normal situation in the car too, unless the outside temperature is too high for getting enough cooling with low speed.
This means that the fan motor itself does not have a full and low speed setting or connection, the resistor reduce the current through the motor and thus gives lower fan speed.

thats what i plan on doing at least for now. I am in the process of searching for the DIY to pass a wire through to the cabin

If you follow the DIY, you don't need to pass a wire from up front - the switch connects the specified wire coming from the back of the CCU in the dash. (It obviously is far more that a climate controller - evidently it is a computer to control various things.
I used the same tools to remove the CCU as to remove the radio to get access to mount the switch available at car audio shops or possibly at Radio Shack.
