My first oil change on a 993 yesterday

That was a great writeup, but you did not go into nearly enough detail about the second oil filter. Apparently, they are typically welded on, and located several feet deep inside a tunnel of machinery. This single feature caused my first oil change to stretch over a couple days and a run to sears.
Like you, I did not sacrifice a rooster. I was unable to get my hands on one, so I wrung the neck of a raven - it did not seem to help. Maybe the feathers are to be used as an absorbant?

Just an update. I did my 3rd 993 oil change yesterday. On the advice of BobbyT on the first page I switched from sacrificing a live rooster to the 10 shiny dimes strategy.
I am pleased to report my oil spillage is down probably 75% vs. the first one I did. Exxon stock prices should fall today.
I did manage to get a good amount of oil in my hair when changing the 2nd filter though. As a result I need to add a HAT to the tools list on the front page "how to" list.

I just did an engine and tranny oil change today and really enjoyed this. I did this the 3rd time and it is always fun and rewarding. I used an universal auto-adjusting oil filter wrench for the first time that was recommended in this forum. It made it so easy, to get the second filter out.

Not need to remove the oil line. After I loosened the small filter, I poked a hole in to drain the remaining oil. The mess was very minimum when I removed the filter. This is an easy DIY and the most complicated thing is to get the car jacked up. However, I feel so secure with the Esco stands! At some point, my garage will have a lift ...

A benefit of removing the oil line is that you get more oil out - quite a bit since its what's left in the bottom of the tank, line and oil pump. I do it very time.

What's the fun in that? Besides, I find that filling the 997 to the proper level is a challenge given 1) no dipstick 2) you have to wait for the computer to cycle for a while before it displays the oil level.
(I actually like doing 997 oil changes - like you said they are a snap and if you know exactly how much oil to put back its all good...).
Cheers

I laugh every time I read your first post on this. Being new to 993 maintenance, do I even dare try to attempt an oil change with the car only on jack stands???

There are so many great DIY descriptions out here and if you get stuck, there is always help on this forum. I only work under jack stands because I followed a recommendation from rennlist: ESCO stands. They are safe, safe, safe.

I am still running on the 5wX0 synthetic I had in the car when I purchased it in September 2011. Its really not that bad since the car is parked during winter. I have experience with my past 89 Carrera but the 993 just scares me after reading these threads.
My plan was to use a left over case of BP 20w50. I noticed you are using a mix of BP 20w50 and 10w30. Is it a 50-50 mix?
