Default Windshield replacement cleanup...

The dealer did the front and rear glass last week, picked the car up ( finally...after a 3 hr wait ), on Friday night at 7:00pm, drove home in the rain.

Next day I decided to give her a nice bath...all the better to appreciate the new glass...and discovered a line of left over adhesive from where they had masked off on the roof for both the front and rear windows.

I thought a polish and wax would easily remove the remnants but NOT. So before I start in with the 1000 grit wet paper...( just kidding ), anyone have a suggestion for something that would remove the tape residue and not the paint? WD40? Goo-Gone? Lighter fluid? Barbecue starter? Brake cleaner, hahahahaha :-)

Xenit Cleaner & Remover, but knowing that you probably don't have a can handy, try some Goo Gone on a soft cloth and gently apply to a 1 centimeter section of the problem area. Wipe dry and note the paint finish. I am sure it'll be OK as I've used it on paint before. Wash the area after doing so.

I've used kerosene in the distant past and sometimes it can dull the paint...not very much, but it can very slightly, requiring some polishing with ultra fine polish.

Incredible that after all that coin spent, you have to do the finishing touches. They should have used the appropriate masking tape that does not leave any residue.

Do you mean 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, 08987.

I bought a couple of cans; but haven't used them yet. I wasn't sure if it is the stuff RLers were talking about.

Odorless mineral spirits is a great adhesive remover too.

Use this stuff, it's safe on the paint.

What you do is spray it on a towel, then press it into the glue, hold it there till the glue gets gooey, then wipe off.

Thanks guys, heading out to the shop now, towel and goo-gone in hand...WD 40 as backup!

Jim

And yes Alex, I was surprised and well, disappointed with the condition I received the car in, despite the $$$$$. There is more to the story but not to be told here...too inflammatory.
