Interesting read. I tend to agree with the OP's opinion.

Even the non-distinguishing the AWD systems of the 964 and 993? I'll entertain discussion on the merits of each system by others who have used both AWD systems at their limits both in the foulest of weather and the hardest of track use.

I should clarify that while I agree with the other thread's OP's "general" idea re: 964/993's vs newer 911s, I have no comment on the merits of RWD vs AWD in those models.

Can't speak for all but I love my 993. I think there are 2 kinds of 997 buyers. Those that love the marque but need something newer and with less out of warranty maintenance issues, and those who just want to be seen in a hot new Porsche. I was a bmw guy who decided to make the leap to a 997, not really knowing if I'd appreciate the ownership experience. Needless to say, I never looked back and a year later bought a 993 with the need to experience the essence of porsche air cooled-ness.

Years ago I owned a 993 and 964 at the same time, with the 964 being set up for the track
(r compounds)I ran an autox and won my class that day. During the afternoon timed fun runs I was given a new 05 997 carrera s (bone stock down to the tires) to run around the course. I ran 3 seconds faster in the 997 than the 964!! If I had more than one lap I could have had more of a differential. Porsche's new technology works, I will most likely have a 997 in the future because of that simple demonstration.

interesting thread
I've been hunting round for another fun car and try as i might i just cant get excited by the water cooled cars i've driven ..... 997 GT2, GT3.2 just did nothing for me and although the 996RS was better connected and more raw, it was a pretty poor road car and not remotely entertaining at low speed like the earlier cars are. The only one that I really warmed to was the 996GT2 mainly because it seemed quite settled on the road and had that incredible thrust.
All the things that drew me to porsche, the things that mean '911' to me - the hewn from granite feel, the sturdy control weights, the distinctly rear engined feel, the aircooled noise, the mechanical and agricultural texture of everything, the quirky bespoke and slightly awkward interior, the complete absence of 'mass-produced-ness' - these are all the things that are missing from the later cars and as such, don't do anything for me i'm afraid.

Sorry, I can't bring myself to own a POS wet sump Porsche car.
If the 9A1 engine in the new Turbo proves itself in 10-15 years, then I might change my mind..
None of the newer Porsches win any style points with me. The rear end of the Panamera makes Rosie O'Donnell look like Sophia Loren.
But, this is the result of Dr. W's 10 year plan, the new Porsche owner demographic is a clueless badge hunting wannabe.
But apart from that, I have strong opinion.

Its not better for noise, feel, rewarding the driver, character, low speed entertainment, control weight, steering feel, immediacy and rawness .... so actually inferior in many ways, the ways that score high emotionally in fact.

Then again, I'd probably just get a turbo tip cab and avoid the issue since it would be nothing more than a street cruiser.

Tip? I thought they are all now PDK...except for the Cayenne, which still gets a Tip for reasons Porsche doesn't discuss.
