Default Anyone register a Canadian car in California?

I was curious to see what the procedures are. Is it worth the trouble?

Thanks

as long as it has the emissions systems for that year, you should be ok. would be like a car from another state. when I moved from canada I left my car there because I knew it would not pass CA smog.

My C4S is a Canadian spec car from Montreal. My girlfriend was the previous owner who brought it from Canada to California, and she had no problems as the Canadian spec 993s were built to be able to pass all US requirements.

I just imported my '89 911 to California, wasn't too much of a hassle. The car had to be smogged, then taken to the DMV for a quick inspection (once they found a sticker under the hood confirming that the car was 'California carb legal' or something like that, the inspection was done). I brought the paperwork from the DMV along with the smog paperwork to customs at SFO, and I was done (well, they in turn actually sent all of the paperwork to Sacramento, and my title and registration arrived in the mail 2 weeks later).

Just "imported" from another state, a '86 911 that was not CARB legal, only FED (all states but CA), no one seemed to care. "Smogged" as a 49 state car with no problems.

If the sticker in the door jamb says it meets all federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) then you are home free. If it says it meets Canadian (CMVSS) then it is a hassle.

Your girlfriend was the previous owner of your C4S? Good work, man! I hope you talked her into modding it and then bought it off her at a discount because it wasn't stock, too (j/k).

I wish.

My girlfriend, or should I say now ex-girlfriend, was given the car by her previous boyfriend, who is some famous French-Canadian rock star. She was hot as all get out, but cheap as hell. I had some fun with her, but I've probably had more fun with my 993

Thanks for all the info. All emission stickers are identical to CA 993s. Just need a smog and swap out the speedometer to US spec, then head to the DMV. Got bill of sales, title and paper works from the Register Importer. Anything else I would need to bring to DMV?
