Default Questions on Vise Selection

I am finishing up my work area in my garage and want to get a good vise. Left my last one in my old house. I've looked at a few and read some reviews and many people claim to have broken the jaws on some of the cheaper end vises. HAve any of you broken a vise jaw? What brands/models would you recommend for a medium duty vise 4-6"?

Thanks for your opinions.

RECORD makes a good vice, but there are many others as well. I would go for a 6" if you have room, and remember when you mount the vice to the bench, make sure the stationary jaw is just outside the vertical plane of the work bench.

Hmm...could be the cheap new ones. Mine is from my dad, thinks its about 50 years old, and it tough as nails. No idea of the make.....never looked but it does the job right.

Remember, the bigger the better!

Cheers,

Mike

I mounted my 6" vise to a 12" piece of 2 x 12. Allows for portability, and can be clamped to the work surface when needed, which isn't often.

That is a great idea. One that I'm going to steal.
