9Magazine.com's "Baby Boxster Rumors Surface Again – New 551 Spyder?"
Matthias Müller wants a baby Porsche – And a Porsche sportscar for everybody
A report from Reuters claims that Porsche is still mulling over an entry level two-seat sportscar. This new sportscar could revive the classic two-seater race car 550 Spyder and would be cheaper than the Boxster, Chief Executive Matthias Mueller told a German newspaper. “I can imagine that such a modern version of the famous James Dean Porsche would be well-received by our customers,” Daily Handelsblatt cited Mueller as saying in an interview published on Thursday.
VW Bluesport Concept: Porsche could utilize VW platform and Golf components to produce an entry-level two-seat sportscar called the “551 Spyder.” This could help reduce the car’s base price.

Porsche may add this entry-level sports car as part of the plan to double global sales to 200,000 units by 2018. In previous statements, Porsche Cheif Executive Matthias Mueller has told reporters that Porsche could make the car a little bit cheaper by using modular systems from the next-generation Volkswagen Golf platform. ”That could be a way to have a platform for a smaller sports car.” He also said a small Porsche could be produced in one of the automaker’s Golf assembly plants.
It has been rumored for some time that Porsche was also considering the less expensive option of adapting an existing VW four-cylinder powerplant to power the new “Baby-Boxster.” Porsche has not sold a vehicle with a four-cylinder engine since 1995.

porsche, like ferrari (california spider) have now tarnished a historic name with a new model feeding off the historic name.
that being said i would give it a shot for basic transportation. BUT it has to be basic. 550 basic. almost look the same as the original to the point of concept car like finish.

I'd say it is the FF that's tarnished the Ferrari brand, not the California. However, Porsche tarnished the brand long ago with first an SUV and then an ugly 4-door sedan.

as stupid as it sounds they shud make it look almost exactly like the original 550 ...with a $45-$60K price tag. Replicas are $25-40K so a guy could pay a $15-20K premium and have a "real-ish" one.
I'd buy it

Volkswagen group mentality.........hit every and any segment......smoke the competition....
Can't wait for the new Porsche tractor....
Amazing amount of models being produced and segmented by all manufacturers to see what sticks....lots of duplications..........the marketing of special limited run and exclusive models also becoming NOT so special.......
Good time to be a car buyer, but can be confusing.......
