the rear lower part of the spring on a M030 holds on a piece of plastic that you can mount after hand.
if I understand correctly what you are explaining Mike, its the bottom rear shock spring .
If so and you don't have the part, the number is 99333311001 cost $2 or so
or maybe I did not understand well

Geolab,
Does that shim, or whatever, change the ride height to any appreciable degree.
I put on an MO30/Bilstein setup awhile back but was never aware of this part. The spring just rests on the perch nut of the Bilstein.

It definitely can be an internal shock failure. This happened to me when Stimola at SRP botched a rebuild of one of my JRZ shocks. Terrible clunking as soon as the wheel hit any bump at all, even at 2 mph. When you get to the point of pulling your hair out, then you may want to pull the shock and send it out for eval/rebuild.

FOUND IT!
Turns out, I had one loose bar mount (wasn't seated properly) & the end link to the shock was loose & causing the noise.
When I was jacking up the car, it was one side. This loaded the suspension & sway bar. When I pushed/pulled/prodded it didn't make any noise. When I put it up on ramps, both sides were equal, & when I was removing the sway bar, I found the end link clunking.
So simple, such a PITA to find. I should have just left it alone till I had the proper time to mess around instead of rushing it.

glad it was just that.... i had flashbacks of that clunking noise I encountered a few weeks after the M030 install. Mine was a broken drop link that rotated on my causing the control arm to bash against part of the strut where the link attaches. Not fun.... glad yours was better
