My car is currently equipped with an older Alpine CD player but I want to buy a new head unit that works with my iPod.
Look: Must look correct inside and old 911; no flashy graphics or wild colors. I want the illumination to match the instrument lighting color.
Volume ****: I much prefer a **** over a button. I owned a CDR-220 and the rocker volume button always bothered me.
Features: I don't need many. CD or no CD is fine with me as long as it produces good quality sound when connected to an iPod.
Cost: Up to $750 is fine.

I believe the CDR-210 had the rocker volume switch, the 220 has a conventional ****. The 220 can also take an adapter for your ipod but it fits in the slot for the optional front CD changer so it's an either or proposition. The Becker Traffic Pro also looks stock and is basically a CDR-220 with navigation, albiet a fairly primative version. Neither unit is still manufactured but used/reconditioned ones are available either from Becker or occasionally on Ebay.

My mistake - clearly the 220 does have a volume ****

I will never use Nav so maybe the Traffic Pro and the 220 are even more correct in an air-cooled 911 than the Cascade and Indianapolis are? Why are people buying the aftermarket units?

What are the key differences between the Traffic Pro and the 220?
The 220/TP look closest to stock IMHO which I think is why they're so popular. One note to be aware of, the 220 was stock in the Boxster and those units have a different faceplate than the 993 compatable units. The difference has to do with the viewing angle. A Boxster unit in a 993 works just fine but you can't really read the display. Becker can sell you a correct faceplate - not sure of the cost but I think around $100. If you buy a unit from Becker or SW Stereo be sure to specify it's for a 993.

Have a cdr-220 in a 93 C2 and love it. Looks correct, some nice features. Becker reintroduced the revised faceplate, as 2MC states, $100 plus core. Makes a nice difference. And swstereo knows a lot about stereos and p-cars.

+1 on CDR-220. with a good amp and speakers, it sounds very good.
There have been many upgrades, search will show a lot of rennlister cars and what they have done.
220 is a good reasonably priced way to go. Be realistic, a car is not the best environment for hi fidelity music anyway. make sure you get the faceplate mod or you won't be able to see the display.
my advice:
1. set your budget, stick to it.
2. get a decent amp and speakers to go along with the head unit
3. find a good installer, or DIY: CDR220 is pretty easy to install, if you have a 210, it is pretty much a direct replacement.

I love the CDR 220 and how it looks. I'm playing Pandora off my Droid X through the auxiliary cable. It sounds amazing. Far better sound quality than the CD or FM Radio for some reason. The phone sits in the tray on the console and cables run through the center housing for the auxiliary input and for charging are completely hidden. Nice clean setup both visually and soundwise.
