There are other credit unions who will finance it. Just sayin'...

Because they are much more rewarding to drive compared to the later model cars ...

I on the other hand would say that many lack one extremely important thing in life...passion.

And its even more lacking in the younger generation...texting to the person sitting next to them , playing Gameboys all day long ...now those people really need to get a life.

There will always be that certain percentage who thinks the best car is one that has the quickest 0-60, 1/4 mile and lap time because that is all that matters to them.

Now on the track in competitive racing, it is. I'm not on the track. I own what I own because of the sheer enjoyment it brings me. The other car I test drove before making my final decision was a 997. Nuff said!

Rebuilding a Porsche air-cooled engine is silly expensive. That red car in my avatar has almost $18K into its engine, and I did the work. I did the basic rebuild for about $10K. It was the extra 30 or so HP that cost the other $8k.

I've never driven a 993 and I read the performance is somewhat less than a 996 which is understandable with improvements in technology, but for me the 993 wins hands down in the style deptartment. I hate the 996 headlights and I love the 993's fender flares, curves - everything.

I'm thinking of trading for a 993 since I can't afford to buy or repair a 996 GT3 - if the engine goes I have to buy a new one from Porsche. I do not like being held hostage by anyone. It seems with the 993's one could build an engine almost entirely with aftermarket parts. Is this true? I want to be able to rebuild the engine, or the entire car for that matter, without having to go thru Porsche and pay their ridiculous prices for parts.

I can deal with slightly less horsepower and handling 'cause for me the car is more than just the performance or lap time, the history and heritage factor in there considerably.

But it can be done. If my 996 dies it costs 16k to buy a crate engine from Porsche - stock.

Here's one I'd like to have:

Name: 95 993.jpg

Size: 40.9 KB

The price is $38k. Does that sound about right? It's in pristine condition.

That is a new engine. $10K didnt get me new pistons, rods, etc-I re-used a lot of stuff after inspection. It also relied on me not making a huge error my first time out and trashing everything. New Pistons and Cylinders for my 3.2 are anywhere from $4K t0 5K.

I'm just saying it isn't all peaches and cream in air-cooled engine rebuild land.

There are folks rebuilding 996 motors.

Love threads like this. Truth is I like all Porsches and I wish I could own one of each. That said of the numerous P cars the 993 is my favorite. When I got my 95 993 I felt I reached the top of the moutain.

I then lusted after a TT and I was fortunate enough to get one. So I'm happy.

But - a 997 GT2 would be nice....

So naturally it costs more.

I strongly disagree. With the exception of the Turbos and GT3s, I can't see why 996s won't suffer the identical fate of 924s and 944s, where the 4th and 5th owners can't afford to fix them and body work makes no economic sense given the resale value of the car.

In '07 I was able to get a used loan for part of my '96, but that credit union was gobbled up my new one. Used car loans only go back to MY 2000. 12.45% - 17.50%. Even though this is an unsecured loan, the rate seems obscene given that they pay .1% for savings!

You may want to Google "collector car financing." JJ Best goes as low as 6.80% http://www.jjbest.com/

Most of us will never be able to safely drive even an "underpowered" 993 past 8 tenths of the limit.
