yeah, that could very well be the case.

perhaps I'm not a porsche (or car) enthusiast, just a guy who likes to drive.

I find the passion, soul and enthusiasm only make the driving experience better and more exhilirating in my 911 and 993.

There are plenty of cars that I, too, just view as cars or objects. They make a car like a Porsche 993 so much more inspiring.

My point was, if the car is your only means of transportation and you have to finance to the max to get one, it is, again in my opinion, not the best choice.

Here in Canada we have May through mid November without any snow. Any nice days (no rain) I take one of my fun cars as well. I would agree on the 4,000 - 5,000 miles per year for a fun car. A daily driver to me is your only car and it goes everywhere everyday in any weather and would expect milage of 20,000. I live 25 miles from my office one way, 50 weeks x 5 days x 2 trips a day would be 12,500 miles just to go to and from my office.

I would have though sunny Arizona would give you 12 months a year of great weather.
Well, 11K from the start of ski season Thanksgiving Day to May 1. In every kind of weather imaginable, from 2 feet on the car when parked 6 hours at the resort a couple of times to torrential rain in the Bay Area during March. So what? Car's fully depreciated at this point. I'm a 911 lifer, shortly entering year 32 with one. Had one before I had a girlfriend. They're cars. Damned good ones that can do pretty much anything. First two owners of the 4S each drove it 15K/yr like clockwork for the first seven years.

I'm either 25 miles from my one business, or 50 from the other. Though I only commute to the one 2-3 times a week, and the other once a month, why drive something boring? Doesn't really cost me much (if anything) more to drive a 911 than say this '11 Impala I've pounded around North and South Carolina for 1500 miles the past week.

I think this picture really clarifies it. The 993 is a svelte fighter. It is a 30 year old design engineers refined over a 30 year period to the point that they had to develop the 996. You can think of it as a well-aged bottle of cabernet.

The 996 is (was) the new school design. Big and built to be safe meeting new crash standards with a modern production built, water-cooled, 4-valve engine. The 996 is lighter, more powerful and faster on the track than a 993. Think of it as a bottle of nouveau beaujolais.

Noveau beaujolais can be very enjoyable. But special moments call for a well aged cabernet. Each year, beaujolais will be bottled, some great, some less so. But there are only a few bottles of well-aged cabernets left in the world, as such, they will always be worth a premium.

But the strongest evidence of the greatness of the 993 design, is what the designers at Porsche proclaimed when they returned to the graceful lines of the 993 in designing the 997.

No contest. I've never had any interest in a 996 and never will.

993 wins.

Why is an automatic watch better than a digital? The digital is better in every way, but are cheaper and less desirable.

When I look at my 9934S (just one of the many beautiful 993s on this board), the newer models just don't do it for me...

the digital watch is better at the objective parts of time keeping. There are certain intangibles that appeal to some people, which is the same for the 993.

its a good analogy

It is all a question of taste. If everybody were as nuts about 993s as many of us are, we couldn't afford to buy one...
