Question Voltmeter 12 V LCD gauge

I like the small LCD digital Voltmeter Alex has velcroed to the carpet and is wired directly to the battery.

Is this available ready-made or does it have to be put together?

Checked the Edelweiss leads but cannot make out what type or model this is or where it can be ordered?

Same as play and plug.

I need the lighter socket for the RD.

Nice little unit, where did it come from? Who sells it?

Gunter,

The voltmeter is a Datel 20LCD-1-DCM-C available online from Mouser Elecontronics at this link http://ca.mouser.com/Home.aspx

All of the details are provided in IXLR8's Edelweiss site at this link (see photos 1and 6) http://edelweiss.smugmug.com/Motorcy...66706719_xovAp

Thanks, my mistake.

I thought it was ready-made.

Looks like one has to get a separate small box and make the digital unit fit.

Its a DIY unit. Buy the parts and make it type of deal.

There was nothing out there, plus I made them for my BMW motorcycles where I wanted something small. After some dingledorf kid on a cell phone wrote off my BMW motorcycle in Austria, I had a spare...so it went in the Porsche.

I don't like using a lighter circuit unless it is at exactly battery voltage; they're not always.

Adding to this thread as @IXLR8 helped me make a voltmeter with his usage of Bud Industries Potting Boxes.
Parts List:This draws 10mA at rest unlike the Datel that @IXLR8 used which draws only 2mA, so I used a switch to turn it on/off. That said, this generic LCD is, ah, 1/10 the price of the Datel. 🤣

Here’s the same Datel unit from a different vendor at a lower cost for anyone interested.

I get wanting to do a project, but for those that like the idea and would prefer a finished solution is the below similar or a poor substitute?
Amazon Amazon

Thanks,
Rob
The Amazon one should work, provided that you are okay with the silkscreened “VOLTMETER DISPLAY V” aesthetics. You would still have to make up your own switch if you want one. Also the Amazon one has no adjustment. If you want good accuracy, you almost always need to calibrate these types of things as they are always seemingly off by 0.1-0.3 volts….. check out the reviews.

I made a big one and a small one and had to calibrate both ….. both now are accurate and round up to the nearest tenth of a volt at five one-hundredths of a volt.

appreciate the depth of knowledge on it. My use case is to alert if < 13V start looking for charging system issues. What would be cool is to figure out a way to have that in the factory LCD display,

You could hijack the factory display with a Raspberry Pi, create alarms, spit notifications to your phone via bluetooth, etc ….. that would be a lot of work though.

Hi Jo-Hans,

I added a switched socket to my dash in the unused USA **** location next to the constant-on lighter socket where a voltmeter/USB outlet adapter now sits. Here is how I did it:

Nothing wrong with those as long as the cigarette lighter it is plugged into goes "dead" when the ignition is "off". Or you can pull it out, as long as you do not forget to do so.

Trouble with LED displays is they draw far more current compared to LCD displays, way more unless things have changed.

I have this one in my daily driver Acura RDX, but it shuts down when the ignition is off. Got it on Amazon for about $15.

The 993 and my motorcycles have the LCD display that I built and the 991.1 GTS came with one in the MFD. I like the fact that I can see the voltage display all the time (connected directly to the battery for an always-on disply) when I walk by my vehicles which is why I used a low-current draw display, plus the fact that some batteries have low Ah.

Exactly - @IXLR8 ’s Datel LCD pulls 2mA, whereas my generic meter pulls 10mA; this is why I added a switch - to prevent draining the battery.

That being said, I’m a big freak about aesthetic consistency - using a yellow/amber voltmeter display was the only way I could match the look of the display on the Porsche / Becker CR-220 above the ashtray (seen in above photos).

As well, I’m quite fond of my CR-220’s cassette performance, optimized display polarization angle, and my added Bluetooth functionality, so I was not about to give that up 😂.
