Hollow Spoke or Not?
#16
"Turbo twist" is like calling sport classic II's "mesh",
A better slang may be a "4S twist" as the turbo had hollows as a
standard.
They are all called Technology wheels, solid spoke or hollow spoke.
Now the turbo S Technology wheel was hollow spoke with a special bright silver color.
Easiest way to tell the difference is in the special valve stem used in the hollow spoke.

Actually, many of the C2S cars sold came with the standard equipment 17" Cup II wheels. Many cars were also equipped with the 18" twist wheel, though on the cars I've seen so equipped, they were the hollow-spoke variety (technology). Over the years many owners have switched to the 18" "turbo twist" wheel in both hollow and solid versions. Best way to find out what a particular car was manufactured with is the option sticker.
Weird, how every one has a difference of opinion on it. One book made by Haynes "Porsche Data Book" is nothing but stats on all cars, says 17in factory & 18in optional. IMHO, the 17in cups are wrong for the C2S.
In the end, what do I know.

Say, that Porsche Data Book by Bongers you mention, how detailed are the specs he gives? Does it get down to sway bar sizes, valve sizes and the like? Curious.

I got quite a few Porsche books, it's funny some say the C2S came with 18in TT wheels, & some say 17in wheels with a 30mm spacer in the rear. I can't find anything in my factory Porsche literature on the C2S.

It has a little 2-6 page summary of each model series, then stat break downs of each model. It's general info, like bore/stroke, compression, hp, gear ratios, 0-60. But it doesn't go into detail on the engine or suspension.

Each country if not each order had different setups as per porsche.
Mine came with hollow from the factory as standard. England and Germany had 17's on the S (IN GENERAL)
There are times where economy, weather, fashion, style etc differ from state to state. lets take the following as an example:
Porsche 997 turbo S price in England = £ 125.865 = €142.857
http://www.porsche.com/uk/models/911/911-turbo-s/
Porsche 997 turbo S price in Germany or France= € 173.241
http://www.porsche.com/germany/models/911/911-turbo-s/
that's €30k or $42k difference.
So basically i can go in 2 and a half hours ride to London, and order a Turbo S and save 30.000 euros
But the economy in england is dreary, so.....
So maybe the Turbo S delivered in england has a few things less as standard than the german one etc.
(and yes you can order a Left hand drive in england from dealer)

I understand C2S here were delivered with 17" cups as standard, with solid 18"s as an option. Only turbos and possibly C4S's had the hollow spokes.

From the factory TT & TTS were hollow spoke
C2S & C4S were solid spoke from factory
Hollows were an option on all the cars.
In the end, any car can have either, or even a mix of either (bent broken wheel) . It's best to check. Hollows have metal valve stems with the offsets around the valve stem. The hollows have a smooth back side.
The regular wheels have rubber valve stems, & have 2 groves on the back of the spokes.
Of course both types of wheels were made for NB & WB.

Reviving this thread to see if anyone knows for sure if "technology" means hollow spoke on a C4S ? My options list says "technology" but the wheels are solid spoke (grooves behind spoke ) so..changed by PO or technology could still be solid/turbo twist ?

No. The proper Porsche factory name for the wheel, hollow or solid, is Technology .. as you've said, the solids had the casting grooves on the back of the spokes and the hollows are smooth because they're .. well .. hollow!

Thank you. Do you know if the wheels are numbered and matched to car (by VIN or something) or can I buy P-car's and simply be "good as new" ? Mine have a bit of wear and I'm trying to figure out what it will cost to refinish vs. swap out
