Default Shipping an airbag steering wheel

As you probaby know, an air bag is technically considered haz mat and cannot be shipped ground, costs a fortune to ship as I was quoted, etc.

Out of curiosity, what do you all do to ship wheels? Just curious.

Any leads on reasonably priced shipping.

Best,

Matt

I would accept "I heard of some guy doing it this way" answers too!

I purchased a new, 4-spoke leather airbag from a seller in the UK. It was sent to me the normal way.

I then sold my standard vinyl airbag to someone on the west coast. It too was sent the normal way.

Package the "car part" well, and ship it. Case closed...

My FVD wheel was shipped to me via standard UPS. For that matter, I've had ammo shipped standard UPS, and it's explosive. Maybe it's like gays in the military.....

Check with Fedex. There are some weird loopholes, like if the airbag is attached to the steering wheel it can go one way, but if the airbag is removed and sent alone it has to go another. IIRC it could go ground as a car part if attached to the wheel.
Personally i'd think twice about shipping stuff like this 'under the radar'. If for whatever reason it goes off (highly unlikely of course but possible due to age) then there would be serious liability repercussions.

Best to declare as dangerous goods when shipping. Consequences aren't worth it in the off chance there is an incident.

FedEx will ship DG.

It is OK to ship Ground as far as I know. You can not ship it Air without declaring Hazmat, etc.

As mentioned, pack it well and list it as car steering wheel part.............dont mention "airbag". Same with modern seat belts with tensioners...

I have shipped dozens Fedex, UPS, mail etc, no problems

When i bought an air bag it came in a special box w/ extra shipping costs, i tried to reuse the box but was told that it could not be reused. The UPS agent repacked it for me at the counter.

I have a very nice 996t 3 spoke wheel and new air bag that I would sell but I can't ship it for a reasonable price. Sub Rosa shipping is out as the potential liability is too great for my tastes

Never thought about it before. I suppose you are right. The guy that lives in my building but who isn't me shipped it via ground attached to the wheel.

They can be shipped Fedex Ground, just follow the rules to the letter and get them in writing. Better still have a Fedex employee pack it.

I have shipped several air bags. Some attached to wheels and some alone. I use FedEx ground, pack it well and list it as an auto part. I have also had several shipped to me. None were marked as a special item. IMHO, if you pack it well you not have an issue.

I bought a steering wheel with airbag. It had to be shipped by ground and cost about 4x the normal rate.

I bought the suspension setup, including shocks/struts, from Gert and paid for second day air. It arrived on time but then Fed Ex took it back off my doorstep and sent it to Tennessee to clear customs ... adding four more days.

PLEASE DO NOT ship airbags without declaring what they are. I work for the Air Force. I have seen two mishap reports in the last fifteen months that involved explosive items that were not declared. One was a fire initiated by improperly packed/shipped batteries. The fire was extinguished by the military aircrew. Later when the pallet was broken down for investigation other unlabeled explosive devices were found. The second incident was catastrophic. It started with a fire and then undisclosed "fuel wetted" items exploded. The aircrew (2 people) lost their lives. The aircraft was destroyed.
