Default CDR220 and Amp question

I picked up a CDR220 on Craigslist that came out of a 2002 996. The seller also sent the amp that came out of the car. Is it a 6x40W and the part number is 996.645.321.00.

Is this a plug and play upgrade to the amp installed in my 1997 993 cab with hi-fi sound?

Anyone try this ?

I don't have the answer for you on the amp, but most people are using just the CDR-220 radio with great results. I personally wouldn't bother taking the seat off to fit the 996 amp.

I would stick with the amp you have in the 993. With the DSP hi-fi system, the amps are specific to the body style. In other words, a cab amp will have a different part number than a coupe amp.

You might call SW and ask about it. 800 270 2378
They were invaluable in helping me get the stuff I needed.
The prior owner had replace the head unit (I'm assuming a 210 but not sure, my car had the hifi option) with an Alpine. He butchered the wiring harness that goes from the 993 hifi amp to the head unit. SW got me both the new harness and an adapter needed to connect the 993 amp wire to the 996 CDR220 that I bought.
Most head units are just fine, but I'll always consider extra power from an amp.
'more cowbell' is always a good thing ;-)
I'm sure SW can tell you if yours would work.

Thanks for the replys.

Talked to SW about AMP and they said it wasn't worth it.

So I'll just swap out the CR210 for the CDR220 and leave everything else the same.

so your connector from existing 993 hifi amp fits the CDR220 ?

at least you can sell the 996 amp for something

The connections between the 210 and 220 unit are identical.

I thought they were the same but wasn't sure since I never had a CDR210. I wish the original owner had just left it in.

I got the CDR220 without the faceplate mod, so I sent it to Becker for that, so the combo of faceplate mod and buying the 220 wasn't overtly expensive. I just wanted the stock look instead of the chromey stupid big mis-shaped Alpine buttons with the ugly dancing graphics.

My problem was needing a new cable from the amp to the 220 because the Alpine installer butchered it, and (this is the part I don't understand) another adapter from the cable to the 220.

Supposedly it wouldn't work without another adapter from SW. I had a local porsche tech do the work, I'm mechanically inept and destroy everything I touch. I've destroyed so many things that I have learned if it's more complicated than tightening a lug nut, I shouldn't do it.

What head unit is in the car now? The only snag may be if the PO put in an aftermarket head unit and mucked up the factory plugs.

If you're asking me, I am fine, everything works now, 220 and 993 Hifi amp. But I needed an extra adapter at the back of the 220. I need to get under there with a flashlight and see if there is ANY room to push it into the dash farther, because I'm about 1/4" from flush. tech said it wouldn't go in any farther, I just haven't looked behind it yet. Even 1/4" from flush a 220 is better looking than the pimp-a$$ Alpine that was in there.

If you're asking the original poster (did not mean to hijack the thread, just sharing what happened with mine) , he has a new 220 that he'll connect to his existing 993 hifi amp.

to Beagling: if your 993 hifi cable from under the seat plugs directly into the back of the 220, then there's something different between your 220 and mine.
