993 steering rack DIY rebuild tutorial
#62
I damaged a rubber/metal cup seal while trying to install it in the main rack housing. I have a call into KLA industries and I'm hopeful they will sell me just one seal and I don't have to buy a whole kit..
I tried searching for it on the net but all I get are weird asian sites. Anyone know of anyplace that sells this type of seal?

seal
Hi Howard,
It should be a standard seal, you could try any local bearing shops, but im sure KLA will send you one off, they sent my just a set of o-rings when the ones in the kit were different.

KLA sold me just the seal. I;m going to have to make a wooden or plastic piece instead of using a socket to insert the seal into the main rack in step 5.
The socket I used is what damaged the seal. I'll have to make something that fully supports the seal as I push and doesn't twist or distort it like the socket does.

I am about to rebuild my steering rack, does anyone know how long it takes
1- To remove
2- to rebuild
3- To re-install
I only ask because my time will be limited and don't want to take on something that will take me a tremendous amount of time. Thanks.
Thanks to the OP for these great instructions. Very helpful.

Hi godspeed,
I had a local shop take the rack out for me and reinstall it. As I recall, it was about an hour and half both ways (3 hours total) but with some added time at reinstall to fill fluids and bleed the system. The rebuild itself took me about 5 hours in total (aside from a 10 day wait for the correct seals to arrive; I had been shipped a LHD set). The hardest part was removing the oil seals. The write up said to drift it out as I recall with a hammer but mine wouldn't budge. Had a think about it then
ended up using a drift with a C-Clamp and by tightening the Clamp down, pushed the seals out. It was dead easy that way. (This at steps 4 and 5 where we are to try and drift the oil seals out from the steel retainer and rack respectively).
Good luck!
cheers,
Kris
