CDR-210 Backlight Question

Yes, the CDR-210 has a backlight feature but you need to supply power to it. The stock wiring harness plug in the 993 does not have a metal female connector in the plastic plug itself for terminal #6 which feeds power for the backlight.
I went down to my friend's shop who had an old wiring loom for a Passat and was able to get the correct metal plug/socket with a 14" wire and snap it right into place on the plastic plug. Supplied power from the ashtray light wire, and BINGO - backlight.

I didn't have to do anything other than swap out the 210 for the 220 and plug in the 3 plugs and my illumination has always worked fine. Why should some have to add a wire to get it illuminated? Mine has the original 3 factory plugs.
Yes - this for the CDR 220 - the original question is for the CDR 210 - which doesn't have the 'angle' issue.
And just to add to the confusion, the CDR 220 manual shows terminal 6 is for 'illumination', whilst both the CR 210 and CDR 210 manuals show terminal 6 'not used'.

If I am not mistaken the installer got power to the faceplate for night illumination from the wire that lights the ashtray
I'm curious, my '97 came w/ a CDR 210 (may have been added by a previous owner, I don't know) and I swapped it out for a CDR-220 shortly after I got it. Driving the car from Phoenix after I bought it I know the unit was illuminated, would this have been a modification by a previous owner?

Why would Porsche have a audio head unit with backlight capability and not wire it up?
Here is my take on it.
When I replaced my CR-210 in my '95 with the CDR-210 I did a search and found quite a few threads on the subject. The manual for my CDR-210 was printed 6/95 almost a year after my car's build date. I'm thinking (total guess) in '95 there was a CD changer option and not necessarily the CDR-210 option.
Anyway, I think I read that the backlight feature on the CR-210 is powered by the main feed, whereas early(?) CDR-210's are powered by the separate pin. I think this is a bit odd also, but it is what it is, and supplying power to that pin makes it work.
FWIW my faceplate from the CR-210 seems to work fine on the CDR.

I know this is an old thread, but I just went through this. Early CDR 210 do not have an illumination connection (pin 6). Later CDR 210 (starting 1997) do have an illumination connection. Because of this, the 1997 and later 993 radio plugs have a connection for pin 6. Problems arise when a newer CDR 210 is installed in a pre-1997 993. The newer CDR 210 is expecting illumination on pin 6, but the early 993 harness does not provide a connection. As explained earlier, there is a solution. Here is a Porsche bulletin explaining and detailing part number differences in the CDR 210:
