CDR-210 Backlight Question
Hi All,
Just had my shop install a CDR-210 in my 96 993TT, it replaced an aftermarket Alpine radio. Works great, but at night it is not backlit at all.
Is this potentially a wiring issue? Is there a "light" wire?
Or is it just the backlight is dead on the unit... and can it be repaired?!?!
Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,
You'll need to send the faceplate to Becker Auto Sound and they adjust the angle of the display where you can see it. I just did my CDR-220. The cost was $110 and it took about a week.

There is a backlight on the CDR 210 & 220's. As to whether your issue is the wiring or the lights in the unit I wouldn't know. Just a guess, but I bet there are more than 1 light in the unit and having them all go out would be unusual so I would suspect the wiring.

IIRC they just reverse the display lighting, if his lighting is not working now I doubt getting the modified faceplate will help his current problem.

Perfect... Thank you - will let my shop know, surprised they didn't wire it - but maybe they missed it when they "reconstituted" the plug from the alpine unit.

There is a guy in the 944 or possible 928 forums that will do the backlight conversion for $30 or $50. Significantly less than the Becker repair folks. I was going to try him when I get to it.

And just to add to the confusion, the CDR 220 manual shows terminal 6 is for 'illumination', whilst both the CR 210 and CDR 210 manuals show terminal 6 'not used'.

Yes, the CDR-210 has a backlight feature but you need to supply power to it. The stock wiring harness plug in the 993 does not have a metal female connector in the plastic plug itself for terminal #6 which feeds power for the backlight.
I went down to my friend's shop who had an old wiring loom for a Passat and was able to get the correct metal plug/socket with a 14" wire and snap it right into place on the plastic plug. Supplied power from the ashtray light wire, and BINGO - backlight.
