You seem to have ruled out the DME relay but have you actually put in a known good one? That would be my very first step before going after other parts. I've had the DME fail on my 944 and it was intermittent also. If you have a spare swap it out, if not get another, you need one anyway for a backup. They seem to have a 2-3 lifespan.

 

It's funny you should mention this pcar , as I decided to change out the older DME relay (relais ) for my new spare only this morning.
Also interesting to note that the relay that was in situ was a 944 part number , I've 'upgraded' to a 993 PN DME .. I'd be very surprised if this is the answer to my problem , and I won't know at any rate for a week or so as we're under a blanket of snow at the moment...

However having read that 964 article I'm not sure the cylinder head temp sensor is the answer to my problem , I've no check light and no other engine problems that the 964 had..

 

I'd start checking components before spending coin on parts you may not need.

The usual replace parts till it works type of repair you can get at your average garage.

 

I replaced the dme already. I already got the sensor off ebay for $75 and will replace it in the next few days. I will let you know how it goes.

The dealer mechanic said it is a short term glitch and clears quickly, so no check engine. However it was in the memory.

Ok ... Problem solved. That thing is a pita to get back in. I spent 2 hours trying to turn it by hand and the threads would never take.


Finally, I modified a short socket... It went right in.

No more warm start issues or crazy idles after warm start.

Secondly , were you also getting sort term rev oscillations on first (cold) start up .. say between 800 and 1200 rpm for about 20 seconds just after ignition start , and has this sensor cured this??

 

Short of long... Old sensor. Only on warm start. New sensor on cold start. I checked the codes and it seems I bought a bad sensor.

There are 4 stages on the sensors, so it could be at cold, warm, hot etc. Best to Buy a obdii reader or hit auto zone ( they Read for free).

I put my old one back in and cold was good ,but warm was bad. So I ordered another new one. The good news is that I can do this I about 30 minutes blind folded.
