Question Distributorless Ignition

Anyone here dumped the distributor and is using some sort of direct ignition system?
Interested in your story....

Not with the stock ECU.

That will be the next step in my project once I get the car running nicely on the after-market ECU I am putting in.

I am still figuring out if i want to go to COP or coil packs. Coil Packs are easier as they have been done dozens of times.

Doing a CDI upgrade solves the problem as well. The main problem with the current setup is lack of charge time in the higher RPMS. When using a CDI box the problem is solved. There are some appealing aspects of a COP inductive coil over CDI but not for the amount of work it takes to get there.

I was wondering the other day if there was some way to modernize the ignition system.

What would be the benefit of getting rid of the distributors?

Less moving parts and more accurate control of the ignition mainly. Also, you save some coin on those Bosch caps and rotors and Beru wires

What are you putting in that will allow switching over?

I am putting in a ViPEC v88 ECU, its and Australian/New Zealand produced ECU.

www.vi-pec.com

This will allow me to run any ignition system I want, I have the car running on it already (with the distributors), just doing some tidying of wiring etc, then it will be off to the dyno for final tuning.
