A 320d won the 24h at Nurburgring a long time ago. Audis have done likewise. Where were those powerful gas guzzlers?

I've driven a VW Golf TDI with the 340 Nm engine and a 10 year old 55 hp Ford Fiesta diesel in Italy where on the insides of hairpins with grades of 20+ % they pull like crazy...try that in a gas engine.

Good news.

Now if my 12 year old Honda CR-V would just wear out so that I can buy another car.

I read something that said the solid rear axle is now a $96 cost up for Ford compared to IRS, but they keep it due to customer demand. Something about perception as better for modifying for drag racing, etc. Well, that covers 1% of the customer base. I don't get it.

That's pretty much all that a few of us are saying. Given enough garage space, there's lotsa stuff I'd like to have. Instead of my 993? Not yet.

As much hate as it receives, a proper solid axle is really not a bad option for both drag and road racing.

In stock form, the car rides fairly well and it still puts the power down well. They are cheap, simple, and effective...just like pushrods.

When done right with a torque arm, panhard bar (or a watts link) and some decent control arms, the thing will STICK.

Check out some of the success of the mustang in the Grand Am Cup. Read about the car here:

still an oxcart axle back there.

Just for a bit of fun, check this oxcart out.

I think the Mustang does satisfy on several levels, it's a neat car.

And despite its tires and enormous power, it isn't gaining on anything in the tighter corners...not even that vintage 911.

That car is going on power alone...down the straights.

There is a hell of a chassis under that thing. He's carrying good speed thru the twisties. It's not all motor there, far north of 100mph (up to ~160)

Has to be the worst thread ever. I cry every time I see it at the top of the forum list. Only positive is that now my PPI thread dropped down to second worst of 2010.

The V8 Supercars (Ford's and Holdens) that race in Australia still run solid rear axles and watts link, ant they are pretty mean vehicles..

...worst thread ever...tjeff
And winter's barely begun, so the topics are bound to get even leaner...

But I kind of enjoy wondering whether Ford's engineers have overcome the laws of physics, as they apply to the unsprung weight of live axles, on rough surfaces.

Why, because it already has a serpentine belt system?

All these "bets" and other examples of testosterone run amok. What all those who have baited each other with "mine is faster than yours" have forgotten is the competence of the driver. Give me any F1 driver, or even several notches lower (ex. Tanner Faust - of drifting fame) and I'm positive they would run any road course in a rental car faster than any of you could do it in your 993s.

When I lived in New England and belonged to PCA Northeast Region, we used to rent the old Bryar Motorsport Park (now New England International Raceway - with a 1 mile oval for Nascar - but still has the road course) for a Porsche event day. I had the pleasure of riding shotgun with one of the local hotshoes in a 912. He set the fastest lap time of the day against all the 911s including a Turbo or two. His point in doing this in a 912 was to show all us "mere mortals" that driving is a skill honed over hours and hours on the track.

Needless-to-say, I was impressed.

Any remember, any car set up for the track is probably faster than a street 993. Even "lesser" cars such as muscle cars (Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, etc).
