Hi,
I'm looking at 993's now (95-98) and have a few questions.
I already know this is the right place..

• Is there an appreciable difference between the years
• The "S" I assume is just a wide body?
• The standard Carrera seems to be the most available 993 from what I've seen so far (on line)
• Are there key issues or problems once they hit 50k miles?
• If I off my Boxster S will I be disappointed with the performance of the 993?
• No, I'm keeping my 997 TT

I'm sure someone will chime in here, but if you spend some time searching the archives, most if not all of your questions can be answered.

Yes, '95 is different than '96-'98 because of OBDI/OBDII and the later cars have Varioram.

S is wide body, but not just limited to that.

Standard Carrera is the most prolific.

Higher mileage cars: look up SAI. Also clutches tend to go around 50K on some cars.

Depends on what you define as "performance". The 993 may be slightly slower but will probably be more rewarding to drive well and has more "soul", some say.

SAI? Why would the steering axis inclination be a problem at high mileage on these cars?

Bob, drive a 993. Any 993. You might like or dislike it after the 986 and 997 you have. But it's very unlikely that a test drive will not answer the most important and primary question - whether you'd want one instead of Boxster. They are just very different beasts.

Also, unless you plan on doing something specific with it, I'd look for a cab. There's a reason you bought that Boxster, right?

I just hit 50k miles on our last drive. Everything is as tight now as it was 25k miles ago. happy to switch cars on our next drive. ;-). I think the 993 feels more "raw" . That in itself can be a rush compared to the Boxter.

The 993 is the last "ORGANIC" Porsche, and maybe the best looking one too (with the exception of the 904...). It's not as easy to drive as the Boxster, but the 993 would make you smile all the time, the raw sound and response of the air cooled motor is better than any Boxster. And it's more involving and thus more rewarding to drive. The Boxster is easier and smoother to drive with its perfect ballance, but not as fun. I have had my 986 as a DD for a year and a half now, and I love it. But my 993 will always be my favourite. Personally I would buy a '94 or '95 due to the OBDI and non VRAM, no issues here!
