to 993 or to 911
I have been a long time owner of 911's my first was an SC, then a Carrera, and recently a 997 1st gen. All cabriolets. Now I'm looking for a 993. I'm not looking for the newest, prettiest, most advanced Porsche out there. I'm looking for a Porsche owners Porsche. I can't think of a car that is more traditional Porsche then the 993. Am I nuts? What should I be looking for. an "S" a cabriolet, a 4S

Obviously you won't get any arguments here that the 993 is the best driver's Porsche. If you are nuts, is a totally other subject
S, cab or 4S is all very subjective and dependent on your tastes/needs/wants. As a long time cab owner, ask yourself if you want another, or something different. If you want a cab, then no S or 4S for you.

I have always wanted a 993, but when it came down to buying it, I almost purchased a 997 C4S. What kept me from buying the 997 was some insightful advice from a owner of many and both. If your a rich man and can afford many Porsches, buy one of each. If you can only afford one, you have to own a 993.
It was great advice and I have no regrets. BTW, it doesn't matter which one you get of the 993. Once you start driving it, staring at it for hours in your garage, sitting in it rubbing the steering wheel and the leather, you'll love it regardless.

Hello. I recently made the move from a 84' 911 to 95' 993 C2 and could not be happier. The 993 has everything that I felt was missing form the 3.2. I loved that car as well but the 993 is on a whole other level. It's been said many times before but the 993 retains the character of the air cooled generation and adds a touch of refinement that was lacking in the models before. I never drove an S or a 4S but the C2 is a great package in itself. I am a coupe man though, so as I find cabs very beautiful they are not for me. Good luck and you can't go wrong with any model of the 993 you decide on.

I have enjoyed both ... go with the ultimate air-cooled 911 ... the 993

I began my P-car odyssey looking for a longhood S Targa. I briefly considered a 997 4S cab. I ended up with a 993 Cab. I am very happy with the choice and have not looked back. As mentioned above, the 993 retains the look, sound and feel of the 911 line but has some features like electronic fuel injection, power steering, a/c that blows cold and a swoopy body - the prettiest 911 in many peoples minds. When I drove the 997, don't get me wrong, it is a wonderful car, but it drove around town like a Le... I mean 5-series BMW. It hauls a$$, but when do us mere mortals get to play at the limits of that car! I enjoy driving the country roads around Nashville with the top down listening to the air cooled engine with a slight hint of burning oil (cams weep a bit) at 40 mph, but I can step into it and scare myself plenty.
If I needed a DD, it would be hard to not get the 997. But for a pleasure car, the 993 is my prescription for fun. I also enjoy working on my cars and the 993 has been around long enough that you can do almost any repair with the info available on Rennlist.

I love my 993 every day. It just looks so darn good. I started with some track days and now I can also enjoy getting a feel for the 993 as a performance car. I have no experience with 997's so I cand really compare (although I was in my instructors 996 GT3 for a few laps and it was an amazing experience!)

Since you've had 3 911 cabs, I'd assume you're a "convertible guy" and therefore suggest a cab. If you want a change, go for a coupe. You'll also need to decide reae-drive or AWD. Try to drive a few before buying and see what floats your boat. No wrong choice.

You came here, looking for objectivity? We're all Kool-Aid drinkers, my friend. If you choose to join us, you may have to settle for "prettiest." That much, we got.
