Problem solved: Take the cover off. Oh yeah, pick up a couple spare heater boxes in case you ever drive in reverse.

Great thread.

I had thought about removing mine, and my tech suggested I leave it on. He has no issue with removing it for service.

My car does not spend much time idling, and our local climate is temperate.

Doesn't heat rise? I don't understand how a cover underneath the motor would retain heat.

Neither does Porsche.

Guys, don't quit now. Just another 840 posts to hit the 1000 mark.

Further to the lack of data backing up the advantages of removing the undertray...

I take it that all 993 owners who took their undertray off the day the car was delivered never had valve guide issues...and those who didn't, all needed to have theirs replaced.

There are too many factors to say this, and I doubt if we have enough confirmed analytics to confirm either way. IMHO, the valve guide issue appears to be a combination of crappy materials used by Porsche for their guides, how well the stem seals work, how the engine is driven (i.e. averaging lower RPM vs higher vs idling), heat variances, location (which contributes to heat), and possibly other factors we have not thought of yet.

I have not seen anyone do a statistical study to prove this either way, but to my engineer's mind, I am leaning towards cover off, and am voting with my cars engine. I might change my mind if I see someone post facts that prove it otherwise, but the small change in aerodynamics with the cover off is a small price to pay for the air flow.

As far as having problems with clearances, I have had my 993 for almost 9 years now, most of that with the car quite low, and have had zero issues.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey, my grandma smoked for 75 years and didn't get cancer, but that doesn't mean others who smoke that long won't.

As I said, there are proven downsides to running a lowered car without an engine tray.

So far, there aren't any proven downsides to running with one from what I can gather, only theories and conjecture.
