Looking into a 95 993
Hello all. I have recently been looking into purchasing a 993. I have yet to drive one but that will be my next step. I am cross shopping them with 964'2(1992-1994). I have done a few searches here and have a question. Do the 993's suffer the same valve guide problems as the earlier 3.2 cars? I currently have an 84 911 and was wondering if all the aircooled have this problem. If so around what mileage does a top end rebuild become a requirement. I am looking for a 1995 6speed coupe if anyone knows of one for sale please feel free to let me know.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I'm really new here - only my second post, but was wondering about this as well. These following two posts are worth the time to read through:
Turns out a lot of owners have over 100k miles without a rebuild!

Hope these are helpful!

Hi Chris,
I have a 1995 993 with 185.000 km on the clock. The engine has never been rebuilt, and it is still going strong.
My local Porsche Center checked the engine this spring and gave it a clean bill of health.
As always with these cars, I think the secret is to look for a complete service history. If you treat 993 well, it will be last for a long, long time.
Good hunting!

wolf76...noticed this ad that just appeared today; seems like a nice clean example in the correct color combo and nice options including LSD (option code 220). not common to find 95's with this low mileage. no affiliation and of course a PPI should be done. good luck...btw...i'm "tenafly." jay

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Thanks for the listing Jay. That is one low mileage car. I also found a really nice one in LA. Looks to be in really nice shape with service records to go along with it. The miles are a little higher but like I've learned, as long as ti well cared for.

I think all Porsches are expected to be perfect. The "valve guide issue" you refer to in pre-89's is really overblown. Very few had it, and it gets well publicized when they do. If you find a 993 that looks right, have it checked. Ultra low mile Porsches cause me concern-any vintage.
Premature valve guide wear is the biggest problem with 993's because of the high cost of repair and the frequency of the problem. It was a quality control problem at the factory and the only way to know whether a particular 993 has worn guides is by knowing the level of oil consumption, which you may not be able to extract from the seller.
Anecdotal reports from individual 993 owners about the health of their high-mileage motors are no guide (pun intended) to this problem. Also, service records are a nice thing to have, but papers in a folder do not translate into non-worn valve guides. I have every document on my car since new, but these pieces of paper did not prevent the top end from needing a rebuild at 70K miles.

I have 110000 mi uses oil at about 1 qt per 2500 mi. about 1/2 is probably leakage. I think the topend rebuild is more likely in the 96 up cars as they will trip a CEL because of clogged SAI passages . The 95 may still clog but won,t trip the CEL
