I wonder about a lot of things like why the same Bridgestones cost double in Canada.
Or any of the Porsche-parts.
It's an outright rip-off.
15W50 is available at Lordco or Nappa here but only in 1 liter cans at about $12-13 ea. !?!? Yikes!

I buy it at PartsSource and I know Canadian Tire carries it too. It was around $8/litre and I got $10 off my purchase with a coupon they gave me last time I bought something there. They only had it in the 1 litre containers.

I think its just the extra middleman. Get your tires from Tirerack or Discount Tire. I get my Porsche parts from FD or Pelican. I went to the dealer here and they wanted over $200 for oil, air and pollen filters. Pelican shipped them to my door via USPS for $130 all in.

Just change out the gear oil in my 95 6spd gear box last week with Swepco 201. Very easy DIY btw, took about 25 minutes. I chose Swepco after doing research here on RL and giving the folks at Swepco a phone call about their product. I was impressed because of the additives that they put into the oil that when the car is cold the oil will stick to the metal at start up. Plus the fact that Swepco is recommended by several of the indy shops here in the DFW area and is used in many race prepped vehicles. My car has 59k on the clock, did not notice a huge difference in the shifting action as my gears appear to be in good shape, but the shifting is smooth and perhaps a little quiter. I think that this was the first time the oil had been changed in the car, no records from the PO indicated differently. The old oil still had some viscosity to it but now that the cooler weather is upon us this was a good time to replace the gear oil.

Order Redline 75-90NS from Amazon. Excellent, better than Mobil 1 or Motul for my worn synchros.
I have a LSD and no problems (with no additives).

I don't know if you have a Partsource nearby. I just found my receipt. Mobil 15W50 was $8.39/l and 0W40 was $7.99/l. I bought it on sale for $6.29/5.99 respectively.

Have any 993 transmission failed in great numbers...or in any noticeable numbers?
This is much like Lithium-Ion batteries having incredible energy density compared to a plain old flooded lead acid battery. Vendors on some forums are really pushing those new high-tech batteries.
The part they seem to forget is that my original plain old lead acid battery has started my daily driver every single time for 14 years in the harshest conditions without every needing a boost or needing to be connected to a battery maintainer.
I would hope that expensive Li-Ion battery will last 50 years to be cost effective.
BTW, I use Mobil 1 75W-90 LS.

I have a 1989 964 an a 1995 993 I have had Swepco 201 in my 1989 964 for 13 an half years. It runs great all this time also my 993 has Swepco 201 also for 4 plus years an it is very nice shifting action on both cars. I change the Swepco 201 every two years in each car. Vernon.

The only reports are for some syncro wear issues - crunching going into gear, or just plain stiff or hard shifting, especially when cold. Complete failures are rare, specially with stock engines.
I do not know what was in my car when I bought it, so I replaced it with Delvac. I had the original oil tested, and it may have been original fill, showed fairly high metals (which corresponds to a longer change interval).
I did not like the Delvac, as soon as I replaced it, the shifting was not as silky smooth and I had a bit of balkiness in the winter cold. So, I replaced it after a year with the Porsche supplied fill (which is Shell I think), again doing an oil test. The results showed a great reduction of metals in the oil, but the change interval was quite short as well. That new change improved cold shifting, good smoothness. On the next change (next year), I will have the oil tested again (by Blackstone).
I am on the fence on which oil to use next - the Delvac was meh as far as cold-shifting and smoothness goes, I have used Swepco before and liked it. The "factory" oil seems to be really good, but its wickedly expensive (like $100 to fill the tranny).
Cheers,
Mike
