Question Transmission oil question for 993

Here is what's available in my area: (Canada, BC-Boonies)

Castrol, Penzoil and Lucas 75W90 GL-5 gear oil.

Any preference?

Any other oil like Mobil etc. involves complicated shipping.

If you search you will find other oil choices. I know Amsoil and Redline NS are available in Edmonton at least and I know they are available in Vancouver. I can buy Mobil Delvac from the Esso bulk dealer but only in 20 litre pails.

Question

The manual says 75W90 GL-5 gear oil, meaning Dino.

Do some people use synthetic 75W90 for the G50?

Smoother shifting with synth.?

Or no difference?

Delvac for G50s, Swepco for 915s though you could use it in G50s too

Gunter,

I ordered Mobil Delvac from LN Engineering in the states...yes, I paid a bit more, but isn't my tranny worth it? If my gearbox works well with it, in future I will go the route of a 20L pail available at my Esso distributor.

Gunter; I went to a local highway truck repair place (Kenworth), they have the Mobil Delvac in bulk, they sold me 4 liters in my own container. Do an internet search locally and do some calling, I am sure you can come up with something in your area.

This thread is timely, as I have been reading up on the different choices. On the LN Engineering website they state that Mobil 1 Delvac is not recommended for transmissions with LSD. From what I have read the regular Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic does contain the friction modifyers required for transmissions with LSD's.

SHC/Delvac has been the factory fill for years on all Cup and RSR, every one of which has a very effective lsd.

I found Mobil Delvac at WW Grainger in the gallon jugs. If you have Grainger or some other industrial parts distributor in your part of Canada they may carry it also.

Acklands Grainger in Canada doesn't carry the Delvac.

Plus + on contacting any local truck place (Freightliner, Kenworth, Volvo, whatever...) as they will often have a big barrel of it there. This Delvac seems to be a popular choice among them. Stop by with a box of donuts (or beer), a container and a few bucks and you'll likely walk out with some oil.

Thanks all.

It seems that Delvac is the popular choice meaning: Synthetic is prefered even though the 1995-993 manual just calls fo regular GL-5 gear oil.

I'd assume that technology regarding synthetic has come to supercede Dino oil?

BTW Bill, that's a real, real blue.

I called Imperial Oil/Esso Canada and they said the smallest container they sold it in was 20 litres.

I use Mobil 1 75W-90 LS. It works for me.

The Mobil Delvac Synthetic is not a limited slip gear oil.

After installing a GT Rebuilt LSD in a friends 2010 GT3 we asked Matt at Guard, and while he didn't recommend any specific transmission oil he said that the Mobil Delvac was one compatible choice...
