I've been putting off this job for a while, but can't put it off much longer. As others have encountered, the distributor is extremely hard to pull out. I spent 4 hours trying to remove it.
- Pulling it with both hands while trying to rock it back and forth. Didn't work.
- Both hands on and foot on the fender. I looked like a monkey, but distributor didn't budge.
- Rig up a slide hammer, and hammer it out. Hurt my thumb, but no movement.
- Tried 3 different crow bars, lady fingers, etc. Right hand bleed from multiple cuts when the crow bar just slipped. I wear, I was going to bend the crow bar.
Finally it dawned on me. Heat. Took the car for a drive and bring it fully up to temperature. Put the crow bar back on, and on the third try, it popped off!!!
Now, changing the distributor belt is another story. On a 1-10 scale, I'd rank this a 27. And I am not through yet.

I did plugs, wires, rotors and caps a few weeks ago.
while everything was out and I had lots of space I started on the distributor. pulled and pulled, kept looking back at robin's intructions and finally chickened out.
hopefully you'll post more hints and tips and pics and I can give it a shot over the winter. at the very least I'd like to get it out and pay someone else to crack it open and replace the little belt.

I used p-carworkshop.com DIY instructions on replacing the distributor. There are several threads on this board with more detailed pictures.
This is geolab's: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-pictures.html.
Here is one on using a crow bar to pry it out, but it's a 964 and it seemed space is more limited on a 993: https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...tor-stuck.html
Here is one with an exploded view of the distributor which I find very useful: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...oded-view.html
As in the DIY, I would only say do this if you have good mechanical skills. There are lots of ways to screw up this DIY. In my old 964, I paid $170 to change the belt. It was worth it!!!
