Default OT: 997GT3 or CLK63 BS?

Help!! I am coming down with buyer's paralysis, and would appreciate a fresh perspective from people who may share my POV.

By way of background, I have a '97 993 C4S that has been my daily driver for 13 years. Before that it was an '86 911 cab. So for almost 25 years, it has been Porsche. I absolutely love the 993 and have a hard time parting with it. I am fortunate enough to be able to buy another car and am struggling between the two listed above. I have AX and TT the Porsche, did numerous DE, ended up racing in SCCA in the Formula Mazda series, and now see most of that behind me. I can see a very occasional DE, but for the most part I am just looking for a fun DD.

For those interested and don't know the BS:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcD6J...ure=grec_index

I could go with a 997.1 GT3 or the BS and still keep the 993, although I struggle with what would be the point of having both the 997 and the 993. I could sell the 993 and buy the 997.2GT3 or I could buy the BS and keep the 993. So there you have it.

I'm strongly leaning towards keeping the 993, and buying the BS. I see them as both fun cars that are different enough to justify keeping them both. For my use I don't see the added benefit of the GT3 at the sacrifice of my beloved 993 and all the $$$$. Other, lesser 997's don't move me, and turbos have never appealed to me. Oh, and I live in Dallas. After 25 years, I'm looking forward to a good A/C and not screaming in frustration the few times I find myself in stop and go traffic.

Thoughts please?

This, folks, is what we call a "quality problem" to have.

Since you already have the 993, keep it and go with the BS. Then, donate a little to your favorite charity to ensure your good luck continues.

Have fun!

Both are niche cars so depreciation on both should be a bit less than there standard issue base platforms.

The 993 is very different than the 996/997 cars, including GTs. the only similarity is the badge on the hood - seriously. So, you will in fact have two "different" cars.

I think the BS would be a fun choice the roaring V8 would be sweet. But, I'm a Porsche guy and would put more emphasis on the details such as steering, gearbox etc and would think the GT3 is better. Also, not sure if the BS can handle repeated DE/Trackdays as well as the GT3. I realize it's not a garden variety AMG, but few cars can handle racetrack abuse like a Porsche (even the modern, non GT Porsches have shown weekness at the track that previous versions did not)

You have a good problem to solve for sure!

I will check out those forums, Trinitony. 993/BS is where I am leaning. Good to hear you guys see the logic in my thinking. One thing that makes this affordable for me is that I try to buy the right car for me and plan to keep it for 10+ years.

After 25 years I can say I am a Porsche guy too, although now arguably just a "vintage" Porsche guy. And I've never liked Mercs--until this one. It was the F1 safety car and if you look at how its built it will clearly survive the track. Its a bit of a pig, but what street car isn't, and for 95% of my driving it seems to fit the bill beautifully.

I have mixed feelings about the auto, but I will get my MT fix with the 993--but to test your theory I am test driving a '10 GT3, hopefully this afternoon.

AS quote..also on rennlist...

I use my car as a daily driver thru 3 seasons. As there isn't an appropriate snow tire for the rims I have, I really can't use it when we really get bad weather. But, down to about 38 degrees and up to an inch of slush, it's a great daily driver.
It's no comparison the the 997,as it is both a better highway cruiser, faster, and has a real trunk (but no real spare). A GT3 would be the closest competitor. But, Porsche may not honor warranty on tracked cars. You might want to try a the GT3 (it's really a nice driving car),and if your budget accommodates that, it's a close call. BS is much more unique, and automatic. 997 GT3 is the epitome of Porsche.
if you like driving on the track, the BMW is a poor choice. Don't misinterpret, as it is a nice street car than can be driven fairly quickly, but it is a very compromised track car. Kind of like an agile fat girl. Moves better than you'd guess, but not really what you want for max performance. AS

You can't buy the MB with a real transmission so your choice is easy. Get the GT3!

Jmarch, until I drove an auto like this (first a GT-R, then the BS) I would have agreed with you. And if I couldn't also keep the 993 I would be more reluctant. But what the car gives up not having MT it gives back with throttle steer. It is very much a driver's car. I may be way off base saying this, but it seems like the BS was to Mercedes/AMG what NSX was to Honda. Not your typical Mercedes.

And the A/C works. And I will be able to see at night.

BS is an absolute waste to me.

Its a porker, no manual tranny, and a stripped interior that saves basically no weight.

GT3 all day every day and twice on (race) sunday

"I can see a very occasional DE, but for the most part I am just looking for a fun DD."

Hmmmmm....CL 63 MSRP is $145.2

You didnt say if your 993 was stock or if you've done any mods so I'll take a shot - You could have a lot of fun for $20K - keep the 993 for fun and take a slip down the slope to personalize your car - new adjustable suspension (Bilstein or KW), get new sports seats (GT3), new wheels (new Fuchs), and maybe a new I Pod compatible head unit / new speakers (or just send the car to Rod Birch).

You're looking for a fun DD - have you considered the M3 @ $60K or the M6 @ $100K ?

jus' sayin'

Thanks, Steve. My 993 has M030 and the Robin Sun's modification to the mufflers (for better sound). Fikse wheels. Other than that, I have a Nak deck, iPod, and Birch's subwoofers in the back. Makes for a fine set up.

The car I'm looking at is the CLK63 (not the CL63) in the mid 80's. At that point and keeping the 993 I am as stretched as I want to go. M3 is a great car but never got me out of the 993. M6 holds no interest for me.

I think the CLK63 is different yet promising enough to get me to finally try something other than a Porsche. Thanks for the input.
