Yeah, convertible issues aside (Ken, 100% right), I don't know anyone that's moved to a 996 for track suitability.

996s are great on track. If your only "goal' is to go faster than a previous generation of 911. And then, you need to be at/near the limit. All things being equal, lap-time-wise, on a car that's arguably street legal I'd take a 10:1 wt/hp ratio 964 5 speed with 245/275 tires. Next favorite would be similar specs on a torsion bar era car. A 996 gets it done better, it's just boring.

The "fun" quotient is certainly relevant, both on track and on street. The newer faster car is not necessarily more involving - often less so. Love my 993, but have as much fun tossing around my father in law's 1986 Euro 3.2.

My comments on track suitability were in relation to the engine itself. I think the results speak for themselves in terms of durability and risk of outright failure.
