Undertray question
So I recently aquired my new to me C4S. I noticed the oil temps run a little higher than they did on my previous 964. Nothing drastic but the 964 never went much above the first tick (8 o'clock) mark on the temp guage where as the 993 tops out at around the 9 o'clock mark. Could this be due to the fact that I still have the engine undertray on the C4S? Would you guys recommend removing the tray? If so, are there any DIY's on doing this?
Thanks in advance fellas!

Most people (on this forum at least) have theirs off. DIY is simple, jack up the car, and remove the bolts holding the undertray. Should be about 6-10 of them, I don't remember.
Regarding temps, I don't know if the undertray would make that much of a difference. Have you checked the front right fender when the car is hot to see if the front oil cooler is working?

When I had my cab it ran warm. Much warmer than the turbo. I put a manual oil cooler fan switch in. This allowed me to turn the fan on high and control the oil temp. I drove the cab in 105 degrees and with the switch on it went just above the 8 o'clock position. Do a search on tray and oil cool switch; it'll keep you busy for awhile.

I knew an undertray or oil viscosity thread would get started today!!
FWIW, I haven't noticed any diff in engine temp at the gauge without the tray on. If you can get under the car you can take it off in about three minutes with a big flathead screwdriver.
Also FWIW, I've got 140K on my car now - During the summer on the way home, my car gets heat soaked in traffic and reaches about 9 o'clock. It doesn't make me happy but I don't know if there's been any ill effect.

the low speed on the ballast resistor is likely toast...
see here for all you wanted to know and more: http://www.pcarworkshop.com/index.ph...Oil_Cooler_Fan
You can also relocate the resistor and avoid a lot of disassembly.
to do a quick test/diagnosis:
Remove relay R04 (oil cooler blower).
Jump terminals 3(30) and 7(87c) for slow speed. Fan should run, even with the ignition off. If the fan runs in slow speed, your ballast resistor should be okay.
Jump terminals 3(30) and 5(87) for fast speed. Fan should run, even with the ignition off.

Derek:
My car has a tray and the temp is normally at about 8 o'clock. In traffic on a hot day, which rarely happens, it will hit 9 o'clock.
If your car runs at 9 all the time, you probably want to do the system checks above.

Hi
Ditto the resistor. Pound to a penny the low speed is not working. Also I wonder if anyone here has modded the undertray to include cut out sections with a fine aluminium mesh over the cutouts so that air could circulate but crud would be kept out.......

I spent many happy hours researching the undertray issue. Heat really isn't a factor with our local climate, and my Porsche specialist said that it was no problem removing the tray before service, so I left it on.
