That sucks. I'm not surprised that Porsche is reluctant to help people just out of warranty when their engines grenade. I'm sure they can't afford to help everyone with this. It's not like they make much money.

I understand that our cars aren't without their foibles, but reading all this stuff makes me never want to own a newer Porsche out of warranty. Actually it makes me never want to own a newer Porsche. Too bad.

That's a real bummer, but anyone who has an M96 engined Porsche who refuses to do the $8-1200 Jake Raby/LN Engineering IMS bearing fix as a preventive measure is just rolling the dice. From what I understand, Porsche didn't do a proper upgrade on the IMS until sometime in the 2006 model year, so I expect to see more late 996 and early 997s with posts like these.

Another reason not to buy a water-cooled Porsche. As my very knowledgeable Porsche mechanic says, "Every 996/997 I see is put together like ****, and the cars are pieces of expensive junk".
993, baby.
993, baby.

I got a great deal on a 993 and thought about selling it for a 997, but after doing some research I kept my 993. I had a xkr and 3 months after buying it ...boom went the engine. Timing tension failure.
Short of the long... I now love my 993 after a few upgrades and wouldn't trade it for a 997 ... not even for an even trade for a 997 S.

It's not like they can't afford it.
"A new study has found that German sports car maker Porsche earns an incredible average of $28,000 in profit on every vehicle it sells. The figure — printed in Germany’s Welt am Sonntag newspaper, citing a study by B&D Forecast — dwarfs the per-car earnings of virtually any other automaker."

Any turbo, or a GT3, share the air cooled architecture. Until the '10s, anyway.

Previous 997 owner, current 993 owner. The 997 was my first Porsche. While I didn't have anything catastrophic fail on my car, I can say that the 997 was littered with interior rattles while my 111,000 miles 993 still feels like a fault. I really enjoyed my 997; it made for a great daily driver but I don't think I'd ever go back unless it was to a first generation 997 GT3.

That's quite a statement considering it's BS! I've had a few 997's and a 996 and they are not put together like **** or expensive junk. I've owned enough American cars to know what that means. I have a 997 Twin Turbo and it's anything but junk!
