Shifter slide rod mount replacement...
The parts that I'm talking about here is 26 on the pet pic below. They hold the shifter rod in the shifter box. It is one of the few parts I did not change when I built my car and naturally one of them broke on the track. What happens when it breaks is the rod will only be held on one end and most likely slide out of the hole and you'll feel the shifter move up and down. Old and new pic is below.
They are actually pretty simple to change once you get cover off the bottom of tunnel. There's a circular clip on both end (just above number 10) that holds the rod from moving. You just flip it away from the shifter box and it will be able to be taken out. The shifter rod bracket (28) is intalled in the shifter box with the taper facing the box. I put a small amount of grease on the taper and it slipped in nicely. I found the trick to getting the ring back into the hole in the shifter rod is you need to start it with it half in the shift rod (see last pic) and then pry it out around the OD of the rod.

Another helpful tip is to slide out the little metal cup/disc before installing the grommet into the car. Makes it more flexible and easier to get in there, then put the cup/disc back in place.

The same thing appears to have happened to me. Must one fix it from underneath the car or can it be fixed from inside the car? Pics below. THANKS!
Picture was taken from inside the car looking down into the compartment.

I guess you could try from inside the car. However the taper on the plastic part would be facing outside the shifter box and the force on that part pushes it toward the shifter box, so not sure if that would affect the integrity of holding it. You're going to want to replace the other one also -- i'd guess it's failure will not be that far behind.

A lot of guys installing short-shift kits don't know that this is the tube you relocate and then end up with their shift mechanism poking below their car. I've seen pounded out tunnel covers and cut boots trying to make it work.

You need to do this from underneath. The clip that holds the ends of the tube in place cannot be put in from above.
Not too bad to do... just many 10mm nuts!
Try the SSK DIY on our site, it might help (PDF link just above the diagram): http://fdmotorsports.net/index_files/Page2027.htm

Brian -- Yes, it is part 26 (edited initial post). There are two of this in the shifter box, one forward and one aft.
Matt -- yea, I just got some pics from mid-o a few weeks back. ...i'll post'm up soon. shows more of my crazy paint splatter grapics.

You need to replace part #26 x 2. The locking clips (#28) are reusable. Interesting that the guide tube doesn't seem to have a part number. Anyway, there are two shifter guide tube supports (not pictured in the PET) - hence re. what Joe was referring to. Get under the car, take the shifter tunnel cover off and it will all become clear .
