I regularly look at the German used car sites and am amazed how many US-spec cars have returned to their country of origin. Sub 100000KM (62000mile) cars are rare and cars with considerably more mileage are commonplace. Your car would command big $$$ there.

KBB MEANS NOTHING! When will people understand this... To know what your cars worth using KBB, plug it in, Goto FAIR VALUE- YES FAIR! then DEDUCT 20% Off of that...thats what your cars worth!

You're missing the point. Insurance companies and banks use these numbers to determine fair market value in the case of a total write off or when offering loans for car purchases.

I really dont care what mine is worth but $26,500.00 on KBB for my 95 C4 with 72,500 on the clock is realistic from an insurance prospective vs. $18kish back a few months ago before KBB was updated.

You must have hit a wrong button or did not enter the mileage correct. I just punched in your '97 C2S without 'add-ons'. My zip code came up with 'private party' listings for your car in the $36,000 range. Retail just under $40,000 with no 'add-ons'.

OK whoever called up kbb to complain about values just took away some of my ammunition as a would-be buyer - no longer can I use the kbb printout to beat them up on price....
actually ... it never worked anyway... people with Porsche's esp 993's tend to know the market and want a good price for them and they disregard kbb anyway...

So, what's the 'smart' path for insurance value? I know there's been many threads on this in the past but nothing seems definitive. It seems to me that all 'normal' auto policies on these cars will go by KBB values or something equivalent, but wouldn't getting a private appraisal(s) by your shop or some other 'authority' and having it attached to your insurance files be sufficient? I'm asking because I'm going through the excercise of getting quotes for the '98 S Cab and since there is only one other of the 5 that I have information on, it's been a real slogfest trying to establish value and it makes me wonder if it's really worth it.

WOW!! It's been about a year since I last checked and not only has the site completely changed but my '95 cab with 52,000 miles went UP dramatically to $38,000 in 'private party' good condition. Now I don't expect that price in today's times but I am ultra pleased that they recognize our cars as something so special. For those that have higher mileage cars, they were always much lower in the past. Have they changed to the upside for you as well?? Interested owners check here www.kbb.com and don't forget to punch in your mileage and options.

Guys and ladies, I am in the insurance consulting business. Now I happen to work on large company And union health and welfare plans but I have plenty of good friends on the P&C side. They all said it is important that you place coverage with companies that specifically cover cars like ours on an agreed to value basis.
There are several out there and I have been very impressed by the knowledge and understanding of some of these underwriters. One guy I spoke with literally checks in with Rennlist, Dupont Registry, and even some sites in Europe as well as other resources to substantiate pricing.
You pay a bit more up front for sure but the protection is incredible. I had one of the first 997.1 GT3RS to hit the states and unfortunately a magazine who shall remain nameless borrowed the car for a magazine shoot and they had a head on collission with the car on the way to the shoot. Thankfully nobody was hurt, a testament to German engineering, but the car sustained massive
front end damage. My insurance company replaced every part without question including one headlight that had about a quarter inch scratch on it and between my body shop explaining the rarity of the car and the need for perfection the company cut a check for $45 k in parts alone.
Avoid the geccos and many other well known brands and look for good agreed to value policies. There are several out there and if you need a recommendation just PM me and I will connect you with a crazy car enthusiast who also happens to sell a variety of policies.

Pricing seems a little optimistic. Just for grins, I plugged in our '01 base model Miata with 36,000 and it came to over $8000 for a private party sale. I'd say that would be optimistic, too. Interesting that when I change my 993 from manual to tip, the value goes UP by ~$400.
