Just my opinion, but keep in mind on a 100k mi car, you are already taking a hit in depreciation and all that. Suppose you buy it for $30k, put 30k miles on it over the next 3 years, and want to sell it. Prob worth $25-27k then (just a guess) if original paint, perhaps $23 with respray? Is the couple $k worth your hassle in still looking?
Not a right answer there...totally up to you. I just think "resale value" gets to be a bit diluted when we are talking about 12-14 year old cars, and perhaps selling them when they are say 15-17 years old... Respray on a Carrera GT? THAT I totally get would wreck the value.
So, JPS. I would assume that if I could pick this car up for closer to 20k (and it passes a bodyshop inspection/PPI), you would recommend doing so? That price point is well within reach...
I have decided to pass on this opportunity. The seller failed to disclose that the car had been tapped in the rear (moderate damage) and the repaint was performed by Maaco.
Even though this did not lead to a purchase, hopefully this thread proves valuable to other buyers. Thanks again for the contributions!

What a gem!
"Delicately tapped in its hind quarters, then lightly spritzed with a contrasting color of paint"
You could make a jingle out of this; wait, somebody already did:
"Tapped and a respray -TWO BITS !!!"
which is about what this car is worth...MAACO...jebus...
In case anyone is interested, the car is located in Atlanta and has full leather cashmere interior, full power heated driver and passenger seats, Sport Chassis, 40% LSD, Hifi Package, 6sp manual and 18in turbo twists.
Doesn't surprise me. The ad alone would make me wonder about the seller. I've never seen a full body respray that looked as good as the original. I may be weird but I like the slight orange peel effect in the finish. Resprays tend to be over buffed and look 'unnatural' in an OEM sense.
And why didn't he fully disclose the accident damage from the outset. Makes you wonder what else is hiding under that Maaco respray.
So.... what about a repaint at the factory, done by Werk I?
I just crunched the right front on mine.... my fault, no injuries, didn't even break the headlight, BUT...
It will need a new RF Fender, new bumper cover (Bumperette delete, and maybe go to Turbo cover or Euro cover with RS splitters....)
In Iris Blue, it is VERY hard to match (had windshield replaced two years ago, also by Werk I, and they had to repair the frame, and that included a repaint of the panel under the windshield.... color difference from old to new paint was/is easy to see....), so I am going to consider a full respray.
The rest of the body is straight and rust free, and these Werk I guys do not cut corners AT ALL. I don't know what the full job would cost yet, but if it is around $3000 more or less on top of the insurance covered repairs, I MAY go for it.....

Sorry can't see a $3K estimate in your future (unless you're doing all the prep work yourself) if these guys are perfectionists as you say they are. I've heard of full body resprays costing in excess of $10K to do it right.
