Gear oil/fluid change??
I'm taking my car in on Wednesday for some maintenance and started to wonder about the gear fluid after reading some posts. I have records on the car all the way back to 2000 and the maintenance book shows full services at 15k, 30k, etc.. Would a gear oil change be part of any typical service? Is it possible it has NEVER been done? I don't see it listed anywhere on all the paperwork I have and the prior owner always brought the car in to a dealership every year. I have 48k miles on the car now. I don't experience anything unusual while shifting even though in winter it seems to be a bit tougher to get in 2nd gear while cold. Would a mechanic be able to tell if it was ever changed by simply looking at the fluid? Lots of questions but I appreciate any input and possible cost if I should or need to get it done.

Take a look at the drain plug. If it's never been changed (and you haven't spent countless hours under the car with Xenit), the plug will still have its factory coating of Cosmoline.
The gear oil change is super easy. I do it every Winter.

my maintenance book doesn't show a scheduled tranny oil change until 60k miles, so if its been dealer serviced its very possible the oil has never been changed.
at this point it doesn't matter if it has never been done, just get everything done now so you have a starting point for future maintenance.
as posted above its an easy diy, then again the shop should only charge $35 labor and $50 oil for a gear oil change.

For those that do this job themselves the number 1 rule is the loosen the FILL plug FIRST. You want to make sure you can get that out before you drain the gearbox. Occasionally there are reports of plugs that seem welded to the gearbox, you don't want to discover that after you've drained out your gear oil.
