Default A/C diagnosis

So I recharged my a/c, and a couple of days later, it is gone. I figure from doing a search, that it is the evaporator. JOY It seems the 993 is built around the darn thing. My question is, can you prove that is what it is without removing the gas tank. I can not see a sign of leakage, but it is going somewhere.

Thanks,
Emerald

If you pull the pollen filters on either side, you can see into the evaporator "cavity". I would think with a mirror you could inspect reasonably well for dye leakage.

By "gone".......what have the head pressures dropped to? If you're losing it that fast, it should be easy to ID. I know fittings aren't really an issue anymore with R134 systems. Debris damage the condenser?

Hi Ken,

I get low side up to about 15 psi @200 rpm, and a couple of days later it is 0.

I guess condenser should be checked. Front side of right front fender?

Thanks,
Emerald

Well,

I took both pollen filters out, and the evaporator looks good. I looked thru the front spoiler grill, and the condenser looked ok. I expected to see some green dye somewhere. I may have to pump some more dye in it and take another look.

Hey Emerald,

It could be a slow enough leak that it's difficult to detect with dye. You may want to invest in a freon leak detector (snap-on makes a good one). A good investment for those of us who service our own cars.

Here's a link:

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the suggestion. I saw one at the auto parts store, but thought I had it figured out, and it seemed like overkill at the time.Might have to rethink it.

Try a leak detector (dye) and black light. The product is available from most auto supply stores for about $10.

I never did but for some reason, it hasn't leaked since I used the dye. Maybe the product incorporated a stop-leak product. Almost eleven years later, the AC on my Honda is still working well.

If you fill dye you will see it coming out of the drain hose beneath the car. It's a bit diffcult to spot, only a kind of rubber/plastic slot. If there's dye you definetly see it using a UV light.
My evap needed a change and a big green pool of dye appeared on the garage floor between the front wheels as well as green drops hanging from the drain.
Good luck, a big job as you probably have noticed...

Went out and picked up some UV dye charge and the special light kit. I will give it a try later.

Thanks,
Emerald

Thanks Tore,

I am expecting the worst, but hoping for something better. I pulled the pollen filters, and the evaporator looked good. I haven't noticed a puddle under the car, but I am going to give it another shot with the UV charge. I plan on removing the pollen filters, and the fender liner on the front left fender, so I can check multiple areas.

Thanks,
Emerald

If it's the evaporator, replace it with the Griffith's Kuel evaporator. I think it's around the same price as the OEM, and works much better.

Well, I went to the local auto parts store and picked up some UV dye, and a nifty $10 UV penlight. I took the wheel well liner out, and removed the pollen filter, then did a little checking. Found the dye around the drier connections. I put some fresh dye in and let it run a few minutes, then closed the garage door and turned off the lights so the penlight was the only light. Leaks around the drier unit in the wheel well, a thin line at the base of the evaporator, and a fair amount of dye around the expansion unit.

i guess I will get to have a little fun.

I remember reading in a post where Arena993 has helped do this.....
