Wife wants me to upgrade the car
Here's a dilemma ... I love my 97 C2 cab, which, at the age of 46, I drive reasonably and daily. No street racing or track events anymore.
Two years ago, I married a terrific woman. She's also a doctor who, as part of her residency, did some time in the ER, and saw some auto carnage. She is totally supportive of my Porsche ownership (she drives a CLK500). But, she would be happier if I were in a convertible with more up-to-date crash protection, i.e., automatic rollbar if the car goes over, side curtain airbags, etc. She is suggesting looking for a 997 instead of the 993. Just suggesting, not insisting or even agitating.
While I love the 993, I have to admit that I do like the looks of the 997, and, of course, the car is faster and, well, newer. We just moved to Texas, where the 993's AC is keeping up so far, but working hard to do it. But I've also owned a 99 C2 cab and an 03 Targa, and always come back to the 993.
I know some folks on here own both, or have owned both. Interested in those thoughts.
I have a buddy who is a certified master tech and now works for Porsche USA; he completely restored a 78 930 and put in a terrific engine about 10 years ago so he appreciates the aircooled cars and likes the 993, but he told me "just get a 997."
Having learned the secret to marriage along the way to this one (Rule number one: Keep your wife happy; rule number two: Don't forget rule number one), there's also some motivation on that front. But it's not a "have to" situation.
Hell, at least it's a little different from the "wife's making me sell the 993 so we can buy a house" threads that drive everybody crazy!

Great on the suggestions to buy multiples, but seriously, in any convertible if your number is up your number is up. I'd really like to see the "but for" a side airbag the occupant would have survived collision. I suppose there's a scenario out there where it happens. But still............. I think the biggest improvement to be made is making sure you are the most attentive and skilled driver you can possibly be.

The ER can provide a distorted view of the world. 100% of the people she sees are in a bad way. That's not the real world.

Divorce your wife and find a new buddy (master tech). Dont get married again and change motto to "numro uno". :-)
Almost as seriously.....all open top motoring comes with it increased risk in the event of an accident (think roll over or submarining) of injury. If you absolutely must conform to your wifes subtle suggestions then I suggest 993 coupe. Put in a half/full cage and it will be safer than her CLK500. In that case - you wont need side curtains as you will be in one of the strongest motoring structures by design, materials and engineering that has been manufactured in the last 20 years IMHO....

Its not just airbags, the 997 is replete with electronic safety features that try to keep you out of trouble. I know the 993 owners will poo-poo on them, but I think Porsche really wanted to get rid of its widow-maker reputation. Anyway, when tooling around town, its great to have it when you need it, and you can disable it on the track.

There's a reason no one allows those 4 point "tuner belts" at track events.
30 years with a 911, and being heavily involved from both a business and club/enthusiast perspective; this doesn't come to mind. Maybe trailing throttle oversteer, but that's pretty much been out of the discussion since the introduction of the 964.
