Default Thoughts on Motul 6100 15W50

Guys
My 80K service parts arrived in the post from Pelican a few days ago. Lots of stuff, and some nice Hargett valve covers as well. Gonna be a cave man weekend in the garage.

I have been reading and doing my head in with the engine oil debates. I've always used Mobile One - but now I don't know.

So - I can get hold of some Motul 6100 15W50 at a reasonable price here in Aus. Anyone have any advice on using this engine oil ?

I might also use their DexIII and Motylgear 75W90.

Guys who have used Motul - your input would be much appreciated.

Regards

Ken

Hey Ken,

I have used Motul for a long while and love the stuff, both in the engine and in the tranny. I have only used the 300v in the engine so really cannot comment on the 6100. Not sure it has enough ZDDP, as it really is designed for more modern engines. A quick call to Motul should get the answers on the ZDDP content though.

From the tranny perspective, I run the Motul Gear 300 75-90 racing transmission oil, it has been excellent.

PS: My sister lives in Perth, I need to Visit one day.

Do it. I use Motul 15w50 . Not sure it makes all that much difference - a boutique oil can have a nice placebo effect though. But it certainly won't harm anything in your engine if you switch.

I ran it for 6 months and couldn't tell the difference between it and Mobil 1 so I switched back to mobil to save a few $$ since I change it every 6.

Mobile is so expensive here in Aus - I think 5 litres of M1 15W50 is AU$150. Motul is like AU$70.
I'll try it out - will grab some oil tomorrow.

Steven - if you get down to Perth - let me know - lets go for a spin around Perth.

Motul is an excellent choice.
personally i preffer it over mobil-1
I used for years when i lived in other countries.
Motul has over 100 years experience on lubricants, and it is used by many Ferrari and race bikes in many countries.

Very expensive in the States ....

No experience with the 6100, but I've been running 300V for a couple weeks. I notice that the engine seems to warm a bit quicker. What I really notice is that it stabilizes back to nominal temp after heating up (from idling in traffic or high-revving) much quicker than previous fills.

From what I can gather it's makeup is similar to oils of old, where the calcium and magnesium is balanced, rather than a ton of calcium only, like most all oils today. Zinc and phosphorous seems to be a bit lower than formulations of the same product from a few years back, but still within recommended range (per Steve W. and Charles @LN.) It has a ton of moly, and I'm not sure if this is good or bad.

I will stick with it, I figure it's a small price to pay (relatively) for the peace of mind knowing that it's a really solid choice for our cars. I got mine from Charles at LN Engineering.

Thanks boys - that's some positive feedback. Will give it a try.
Drained the oil last night - forgot what a PITA the small filter is to get out.
Noticed that the rear right CV boot has split - another job to the list. Hope it's a simple DIY.
Will send some feed back on the oil once I've gathered the data.
Cheers.

I don't think the issue is any power increase or feel, its wear on some of the bearing surfaces that may not manifest until significant mileage.. There are a few spots (like the layshaft bearing, nose bearing, etc) that seem to take it harder.

Here is a very good discussion:

Cheers,

I've been using V300 15W-50 for 5000 km.

A little difference from Mobil 1 0W-40 I used before: non more oil consumption...! 1/2 litre in 5000 km.... before I used to add 1 litre every 3000 km...

Ken,

Motul 300V 15W50 was recommended to me on this forum by Charles Navarro and I have been using it happily ever since. Without going into all the arguments previously raised in that Feb 2008 thread, his recommendation, together with the corroboration on abnormal wear issues from Steve W and BB (JET951), are ones I trust and am thankful for.

All the best,

Glad to see you on the forums Chris. Hope all is well.

I found a place that sold Brad Penn 20W50 - so I picked up a case.
In Aus it cost AU$125 - that's cheap. What does this stuff cost in the states ?
Guess the report back for this forum will be with BP oil now.
Cheers all ...

Hi,
Just had my oil changed (literally this morning) and my indy said that I should switch from my current (Mobil 1 15W50) to Motul 300V 15W50. (BTW, he BUILDS and RACES p-cars as well as services them.)
If I notice anything 'different' I'll holler.

I have been using Motul's 300V for years and I am very happy with it thus far. Their Gear 300 tranny oil is also great stuff. BTW in Europe Mobil 1 is about 25-30 euros/liter but Motul is much cheaper. Its the other way around in Canada.
