Default What should 90,000 Mile Service Cost?

For years, I have used an independent shop in West Los Angeles whom I feel is honest and does good work.

I received a $2,300 quote for a 90,000 mile service. Does that sound right? It seems high to me. I already replaced the alternator and the other belts, and replaced a belt sensor, a couple of months ago when one broke.

They also say my ingition wires are arcing and need to be replaced. The quote was $1,000 for parts and 4 hours labor - which all together is probably $1,500. Does that amount sound right?

Many thanks, Mark

I've seen the ignition wires anywhere between $350 and $500. Figure $100/hour labor and you're in the $1000 range for that alone.

I was under the impression that there are 3 service intervals for our car: 15K, 30K and 60K. The 90K service is the same as the 30K, just as a 45K or 75K service is the same as the 15K service. The 120K service would be the same as the 60K, and so forth.

If that's correct, the 90K service should cost the same as the 30K service, plus whatever individual needs, such as ignition wires, your particular car might need at that time.

$1000 for the wire set alone is very high.
I checked 2 online sources for you:

Beru Spark Plug Wire Set; OE Type with Coil Wire

www.autohausaz.com $446.49

www.Pelicanparts.com $525.75

I just did the do it yourself kit from pelican for a buddy (they send you the wires, you have to transfer over the connectors). The kits are like 170 bucks, then add maybe an 1 to 1.5 huors labor to swap over the connectors and get the wires matched up and in the holders.

For the DIY guy, that is the way to go. Heck if you are paying full boat retail for parts at a shop it is still the way to go and eat a little extra labor IMHO.

I personally wouldn't just swap the wires. The connectors do age and go bad as well.

True, but i have pulled very few sets of wires out of 993's with bad connectors. And i've pulled a lot.

And I've had 2 fail on my 964s... One on the distributor cap, and one on the exhaust valves.

and I hate to sound like a broken record (said this in previous threads) but the plug-end connectors also contain resistors that can and do fail.

What's involved in the 90k service? I'm at 85k now, so I may hit 90K in a couple years. Want to start saving my pennies...

I had mine done three months ago. Air filter, cabin filter, oil change, spark plug change, fuel filter, and oil filters. My plug wires needed changing, but I had to put that off for now. The quote was around $950 for that alone.

They also replaced the brake fluid and replaced my valve cover gaskets. Total bill was $1,555.

My motor mounts needed replacing too, but I'm afraid those have to wait as well.

I did a 90k when I got my car 2.5 years ago and it was ~$1200 w/o distributors or wires.

Ed, this is an easy DIY. Just don't drop a #$%@ bolt down into the engine compartment... Its a <2hour+2beer job.

ps....any relation to the famous George P. ?

When I did my 90kmi service on the C4, I did....
all belts (sans PS belt) including dist belt
plugs & plug wires, (royal PITA, took quite a bit of time)
caps & rotors
all fluids, brake, trans, diff, ps fluid
cabin filters

All in all it was like almost $1000 in parts ($500 somthing for the plug wires alone) Took 3 of us with a lift all day, about 8-9 hours. Most of the time was spent on the plug wires, as you have to remove or unbolt the intake plenum. Then it was the dist belt, it took some time to get the dist out, then time to drill the roll pin out. The drove wonderful when finished.

One thing, is I feel my plug wires were 100% & didn't need to be changed out, this alone will cut the cost of parts & labor almost in half! Since the plug wires are such a PITA, it's a job I would NOT want to do but every 15 years!
